E120 Historical Jesus
Support us on Patreon---Across the world, over two billion people believe that a human being is God. This confession of faith lies at the very heart of Christianity, a movement that exalts the life of a single individual far beyond that of any other world religion. But who was this man? What do we know about Jesus of Nazareth? This epsiode of Gladio Free Europe explores the historical question and historical personage of Jesus, an apocalyptic Jewish preacher from 1st-Century Galilee who was crucified by the Romans. Though this preacher is not attested in any contemporary documentation, his life and his...

The Birth of Christianity
It's Christmas Eve. A holiday celebrated by 2.4 billion people around the world, which centers on a 2,000-year-old story about a Jewish man born in Bethlehem who became a rabbi, who the Romans would later execute in Jerusalem. But what most people don’t know is that the first people who believed in Jesus did not think they were starting a new religion. They were a small group of Jews who thought of themselves as history's last generation, with Jesus as their Messiah. Of course, as we all know now, they were not history’s last gener...

The Lost Mary: Rediscovering the Mother of Jesus, By James D. Tabor, Read by James D. Tabor
“A great leap forward in understanding and contextualizing Mary’s life, after two millennia of her being dismissed and rewritten by patriarchal power structures.” James Cameron “Tabor restores her voice, her faith, her motherhood, and, most of all, her humanity, in this groundbreaking portrait that challenges everything we thought we knew about the origins of Christianity.” – Reza Aslan A world-renowned historian of early Christianity and ancient Judaism lifts the veil on the life of Mary – revealing her revolutionary role as the matriarch of the Jesus movement. Mary, mother of Jesus, is the best known – and least known – woman in history. Revered and worshi...

Paul within Paganism: The Jewish Apostle in His Greco-Roman World – A Conversation with Dr. Paula Fredriksen
Send a textWhat happens when we take seriously the reality that the Apostle Paul, even at his most Jewish, lived and worked within a pagan, god-congested world? In this episode, Ryan Lambert speaks with distinguished scholar Dr. Paula Fredriksen about the newly released volume she co-edited, Paul within Paganism. Together they explore how Jews and pagans mingled across the Mediterranean, why Paul’s message was socially disruptive for both Gentile and Jewish authorities, and how reading Paul within the Greco-Roman landscape sharpens — not weakens — our understanding of Paul as a Torah-faithful Jew.This c...

The ancient Mediterranean teemed with gods. For centuries, a practical religious pluralism prevailed. How, then, did one Deity come to dominate the politics and piety of the late Roman Empire? In ‘Ancient Christianities,’ Paula Fredriksen traces the evolution of early Christianity, or rather, of early Christianities through five centuries of Empire, mapping its pathways from the hills of Judea to the halls of Rome and Constantinople. It is a story with a sprawling cast of characters: not only theologians, bishops, and emperors, but also gods and demons, angels and magicians, astrologers and ascetics, saints and heretics, aristocratic patrons and millenarian enth...

When Christians Were Jewish
It's easy to read the New Testament and come away thinking that Jesus and his disciples were in opposition to "the Jews." But the first followers of Jesus were all fellow Jews and the early Jesus movement was very much a Jewish movement. Would the first generation of "Christians" have thought of themselves as anything other than Jewish? Our guest Paula Fredriksen says absolutely not. According to Paula, there was plenty of room in the 1st Century for competing Jewish sects—including the Jesus movement—all arguing over the right way to be Jewish. (The fact that they w...

What's Underneath All That Doubt? (Faith & Doubt Pt. 3)
The story of "Doubting Thomas" has been used to make a lot of people feel like doubting isn't a very "Christian" thing to do. After all, didn't Jesus basically tell Thomas to knock it off with all of the asking for proof stuff? Didn't Jesus give props to anyone who stops asking questions and just accepts what their friends say? There's just one problem with this reading of the "Doubting" Thomas story, and it's kind of a big problem...Credits & Sources:Craig Keener, Frederick Dale Bruner, Dan White Jr., Writings of Josephus, Matthew Murray, Chris...

Bockmuehl Markus, ed., 2001. The Cambridge Companion to Jesus, Cambridge University Press.Borg Marcus.
БИБЛИОГРАФИЯ: • Paula Fredriksen, Jesus of Nazareth: King of the Jews: A Jewish Life and the Emergence of Christianity (1999) • Crossan John Dominic, 1991. I am defending the resurrection by looking at it from 1 Corinthians 15. I will also be looking at two articles from or interviews of two resurrection skeptics. One is from Christianity Today, where Paula Fredriksen is interviewed by Justion Bass on April 13, 2020, in his article entitled, "What Skeptical Scholars Admit about the Resurrection Appearances of Jesus." The second article is from Brent Laudau in his article...

podcast 164 – On Counting Gods
The terms “atheism,” “monotheism,” and “polytheism” seem straightforward enough, but in fact there is unclarity in how a lot of scholars think and write about these, due to the ambiguity of the term “theism.” In this talk at Boston College in December of 2016, based on my recently published paper “On Counting Gods,” I distinguish these concepts: deity, God, The Ultimate, and show how they are logically related to one another. The result is, I claim, a better scheme for classifying religious worldviews, shown in two of the charts below. I explain briefly here how I think this scheme he...

Jesus of Nazareth announced that God was about to redeem the world. Some 450 years later, the church taught that the far greater part of humanity was eternally condemned. The church that insisted that Jewish scriptures were Christian scriptures also insisted that the god who said "Be fruitful and multiply" actually meant, "Be sexually continent."
