Cousins on Crime
The Honor Killing of Banaz Mahmod
The Mahmod family fled Iraq to pursue a better life in South London in the late 1990's, but a better life was not waiting there for the young girls in the family. The parents and other elders imposed strict, religious values onto Banaz Mahmod and her sisters; compromising everything they understood about right and wrong. When Banaz went missing in January of 2006, her boyfriend knew that her many warnings to police were, in fact, premonitions. Ep88: Payzee Mahmod on finding her purpose, child marriage & loss
This week on the show, I’m speaking to activist and all-round incredible human being, Payzee Mahmod. I learned of the amazing work Payzee is doing, and her story after learning about the devastating brutal killing of Payzee’s older sister, Banaz Mahmod in a so-called “honour-killing” in 2006. Banaz was a young woman with a huge appetite for life, laughter and kindness, and her death had far-reaching and long-lasting impacts for all those who knew and loved her, and also for the world at large. Payzee Mahmod is a survivor and activist tackling gender based violence. As a British...

Speechless – Tell Stories that Change the World
Chapter 05: How to tell difficult stories
Vulnerability. A sign of weakness? Or a powerful asset? Telling difficult stories means treading a fine line. Creating impact through use of stories and experiences that are vivid, credible and meaningful: Yes! Oversharing or manipulating an audience in a misleading way? Not so much. In this episode of Speechless, Maryam Pasha and Simon Bucknall take you through how to stay on the right side of that line, when you decide to get seriously personal. What a year! We cried. We laughed. We ran. We baked. We drank. We ate. We watched. We screamed. We cried. We cried some more. We slept all day. We cried some more. We clapped? We walked. We drove to nowhere. We danced. We travelled (to Tesco and Aldi). We wore masks. We cried. We tapped elbows. We got through it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/payzee/support
