MyNDTALK - Beale Street & Robert Church : Preston Lauterbach
Beale Street & Robert Church : Preston LauterbachIn 1865, Robert Church, an ex-slave, applied for a license to open a Memphis pool hall. Turned down by the county clerk, he built his establishment anyway. When the city took him to trial, Church's lawyer successfully invoked, perhaps for the first time, Congress's brand-new Civil Rights Act. That move helped trigger the 1866 riot. To this day, Robert Church's life remains a fascinating look into an earlier time on Beale Street.

Preston Lauterbach on Memphis and B.B. King - Tom Reney for Jazz à la Mode
Tom Reney spoke this week with Preston Lauterbach, who's the author of The Chitlin' Circuit and the Road to Rock'n'Roll. The critically-acclaimed book was published by Norton in 2011. The Chitlin' Circuit combines original reporting and historical research in providing a richly detailed overview of the period when African American musicians played a circuit of black-owned or operated venues than fanned out from the south to all corners of the nation. Memphis, Tennessee was a center of the circuit, and it's there where B.B. King came to prominence in the early fifties.

I talked to Preston Lauterbach about his book "Beale Street Dynasty". Between Reconstruction and Prohibition, Beale Street thrived as a cauldron of sex and song, greed and race hatred--a strip with unique soul that inspired folk legends, scandalized Faulkner, and reshaped American politics. Lauterbach gives readers a street-level view of these historic events, telling the simultaneous stories of popular music, civil rights, and a community's commitment to and pride in their conflict-ridden city. Brilliantly researched and swiftly plotted, Beale Street Dynasty evokes a lost world of swaggering musicians, glamorous madams, and ruthless politicians on the fabled Memphis strip.
