«Кто-то может сказать: так что же, в Церкви Христовой не будет никакого развития (profectus) религии? Очевидно, развитие должно быть — настолько большое, насколько возможно. Да и кто может так завидовать людям, так ненавидеть Бога, чтобы пытаться это воспретить? Вот только [все должно происходить] так, чтобы это было действительно развитие веры, а не ее изменение. Ведь развитие предполагает, что некий предмет возрастает в себе самом, а изменение — что он превращается во что-то иное.
Итак, понимание, разумение и мудрость должны возрастать, должны развиваться с течением лет и веков как у всех вместе, так и у каждого в отдельности — как у одного человека, так и у всей Церкви; но только при сохранении своего рода — то есть в том же догмате, в том же смысле, в том же значении. Что верою отцов насажено в сей Церкви, на пашне Божией, то самое пусть старанием сыновей и возделывается, и соблюдается, то самое пусть цветет и зреет, то самое пусть развивается и совершенствуется».
«Благочестие дозволяет (fas est) очищать, отделывать, отшлифовывать с течением времени древние догматы небесной философии; но изменять, уродовать, увечить их — нечестие. Дозволено придавать им наглядность, ясность и определенность (evidentiam, lucem, distinctionem); но необходимо, чтобы они сохраняли при этом полноту, целостность и свое особое значение (plenitudinem, integritatem, proprietatem). Ведь стоит отречься хоть от какой-то части кафолического догмата, затем отвергнута будет и еще одна, и еще, и вновь еще и еще одна — как бы уже по обычаю и законно (more et licito). А после, когда отброшены будут по одной части [нашего учения], что иное последует наконец, как не такое же отречение и от всего в целом? С другой стороны, если начнут примешивать к древнему — новое, к своему — чужое, к священному — мирское (profana), то это обыкновение с неизбежностью проникнет повсюду, так что после ничего не останется в Церкви нетронутого, ничего неповрежденного, ничего целого, ничего незапятнанного, но, где прежде было святилище чистой и непорочной истины, там окажется наконец блудилище (lupanar) нечестивых и постыдных заблуждений. Да отвратит сие нечестие от разума [рабов] Своих Божественная благость! Пусть будет оно, напротив, безумием нечестивцев.
Церковь же Христова, заботливая и осторожная блюстительница вверенных ее хранению догматов (depositorum dogmatum), никогда в них ничего не изменяет, ничего не уменьшает, ничего не прибавляет, необходимого не отсекает, излишнего не прилагает, своего не теряет, чужого не присваивает.
