Homesick for Lubavitch
Ep. 44 // "Rosh Hashana 5785" w/ Rabbi Yosef Katzman
Rabbi Yosef Katzman grew up and lives in Crown Heights, where for many years he hosted the "Cable to Jewish Life" television show. In this episode, Rabbi Katzman reflects on different pivot points through the years and how these relate to the community's changing attitude towards asking questions. He also reflects on Rosh Hashana "back in the day" and where this leaves us going into this new year. ____ Homesick for Lubavitch began a year ago as a small passion project and has grown into an important conversation in the Lubavitch community.

Hayom Yom 23 Elul - Study of Torah and good character traits
ר' מֹשֶׁה, בְּנוֹ שֶׁל רַבֵּנוּ הַזָּקֵן בְּלָמְדוֹ — וְהוּא אָז כְּבֶן ח'-י"א שָׁנָהThe Alter Rebbe’s son, R. Moshe, who was between eight and eleven years old at the time, הַסּוּגְיָא בְּשִׁבְחָן שֶׁל חֲכָמִים בְּגִטִּין (ס"ז א)was studying the passage in Tractate Gittin (p. 67a) that praises our Sages, נִסְתַּפֵּק בְּמַאֲמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחָאי שָׁם: שְׁנוּ מִדּוֹתַיand was uncertain about the meaning of R. Hayom Yom 22 Elul - Do not to sting your fellow cut your nails
תּוֹרַת הַחֲסִידוּת דּוֹרֶשֶׁתThe teachings of Chassidus demand כִּי תְחִלָּה לְהוֹכָחָה צְרִיכִים לְהָסִיר אֶת הַצִּפָּרְנַיִםthat before rebuking one’s fellowman, one should “cut one’s nails,” נִיט שְׁטעֶכעֶן זִיךְso that people will not scratch each other — כִּי בְּטוּפְרְהָא אֲחִידָןfor [the forces of kelipah] cling to the nails.יעֶדעֶר שְׁטאָך אִיז קְלִיפָּה וְסִטְרָא אַחֲרָאEvery prick [unleashes] kelipah and sitra achra.וְאַחַר נְטִילַת הַצִּפָּרְנַיִם צָרִיךְ לִהְיוֹת נְטִילַת יָדַיִםThen, after cutting the nails, one must perform a ritual washing of the hands. כִּמְבוֹאָר עִנְיָנָהּ בְּדִבְרֵי אֱלֹקִים חַיִּים, הַמְשָׁכַת הַמּוֹחִין לְמִדּוֹתIn [the metaphorical language of] Chassidus, this signifies the drawing down of intellectual influence into the emotions.Text and Translation courtesy of Sichos in English
