Sundar Raj’s Theatre Roots at ರವೀಂದ್ರ ಕಲಾಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ | A Bengaluru Legacy | Noorakke Nooru Karnataka
In this episode of Noorakke Nooru Karnataka, we sit down with veteran Kannada actor Sundar Raj to explore the cultural legacy of Ravindra Kalakshetra — Bengaluru’s iconic theatre auditorium, only on Radio Azim Premji University. Like many of his generation, Sundar Raj’s journey into cinema began here, under the stage lights of Kalakshetra. For him and countless others, this wasn’t just a venue — it was a launchpad, a learning ground, and a vital chapter in the history of Kannada performing arts. Of unforgettable soundtracks and an emotional core
"In Raj Khosla's films, songs were storytelling devices. They didn't just push the narrative forward; they were also narratives by themselves. They had a beginning, a middle and an end, and the way they were shot, the way relationships were portrayed, and the way situations were brought in... It is an art that Guru Dutt taught Raj Khosla and which he then brought out in a way that really connected with the crowd." - Amborish Roychoudhury, author, 'Raj Khosla; The Authorized Biography' talks to Manjula Narayan about the life and art of the maker of such commercially successful and va...

Send us a textIn this episode of Extra Shot of Chai, we’re breaking down the cinematic symphony that is Mohabbatein. The violins! The vests! The very questionable life lessons! We dive into the love stories, the power plays, and of course—Narayan Shankar’s ironclad school rules that made Hogwarts look like recess. We share what worked, what aged like milk, and what made us roll our eyes harder than Shamita Shetty fainting in the library. Was Raj actually the hero, or just the king of emotional manipulation? The man who thought with his eyes
"I've done three books and a documentary on Guru Dutt and he is always viewed as someone rather morose and internal and a sad man. And yet, there were moments of great joy. You see it in his films. Why did he always include Johnny Walker? Because he had a sense of humour and a sense of fun and his films like Mr and Mrs 55 and Aar Paar are really wonderfully funny. This diary was to emphasize the lighter side of Guru Dutt. So there are various anecdotes from people who remembered that side of him" - Nasreen Munni Kabir...

OCLF - 2021 | Diana R. Chambers on “THE STAR OF INDIA: From Story to Screen In Conversation with Kshitij Kokas
“I think the story explains how the fascinating time of Hollywood connects to the end-of-the-British Raj in India. The sentiment of "The following Lana Turner" and a Cambridge-taught maharaja undermines his realm during the last days before Independence. A fictionalized account, The Star of India, depends on the genuine sentiment between a rising youthful entertainer and a Cambridge-taught war legend and leader of an antiquated territory. It is 1946 Hollywood, and it sparkles when the swank Maharaja of Cooch Behar, Jagaddipendra Narayan, meets Star of Tomorrow Nancy Valentine. Nancy was sent back home during India's fast approach to Independence. Amid th...

New Books in Indian Religions
Brian A. Hatcher, "Hinduism Before Reform" (Harvard UP, 2020)
Did modern Hinduism truly emerge due to the “reforms” instigated by “progressive” colonial figures such as Rammohun Roy? Brian A. Hatcher's new book Hinduism Before Reform (Harvard University Press, 2020) challenges this prevalent notion. Aimed at sidestepping the obfuscating binary of “progressive” vs “traditional”, this book examines in tandem two early nineteenth-century Hindu communities and their influential leaders: Rammohun Roy (founder of the “progressive” Brahmo Samaj) and Swami Narayan (founder of the “traditional” Swaminarayan Sampraday movement). Hinduism Before Reform advocates a radically different understanding of the origins of modern Hinduism by problematizing the notion of “reform” itself, instead advocating for viewing these movements as “...

"I saw you and walked away leaving my eyes there." "I saw you and walked away leaving my steps there." "I saw you and walked away leaving my heart there." These lines would not sound as good in English translation as would in the original Nepali ever-green by Udit Narayan. I have only tried to give some sense to what they meant.
