'स्मृति संवाद' के माध्यम से हमारा उद्देश्य हिंदी भाषी राज्यों में हिंदी की गतिविधियों को रिकॉर्ड करने और संजोने के साथ-साथ हिंदी के छोटे-बड़े साहित्यिक केंद्रों की विगत हलचलों को भी यथाशक्य दर्ज करना था।
हमने सितंबर 1999 से मार्च 2001 तक उत्तर प्रदेश दिल्ली, राजस्थान, मध्य प्रदेश, महाराष्ट्र, पश्चिम बंगाल और बिहार यानी 7 हिंदी भाषी राज्यों की लगभग 25000 किलोमीटर की यात्राएं रेल, बस, टैक्सी ऑटो रिक्शा और पांव पैदल कीं। इलाहाबाद, बनारस, दिल्ली, लखनऊ, गोरखपुर, जयपुर, उदयपुर, जोधपुर, बीकानेर, बोरुंदा, ब्यावर, भोपाल, जबलपुर, इंदौर, उज्जैन, देवास, विदिशा, खंडवा, मुंबई, कोलकाता, रांची, पटना, मुजफ्फरपुर और आरा यानी 24 नगरों के 149 साहित्यकारों के साक्षात्कार हमें रिकॉर्ड किये।
इन साहित्यकारों की न्यूनतम आयु 30 वर्ष और अधिकतम आयु 95 वर्ष थी।
उन साहित्यकारों में से अनेक ने अपने जीवन के अंत समय में यह साक्षात्कार रिकॉर्ड कराए थे। कुछ अस्वस्थ थे, कुछ साहित्यकार साक्षात्कार रिकॉर्ड कराने के फौरन बाद दिवंगत हो गए और कुछ ऐसे भी थे जिन तक हम चाहकर भी उनके जीवनकाल में नहीं पहुंच पाए जैसे डॉ रामविलास शर्मा और कवि केदारनाथ अग्रवाल।
इस प्रकार एक एक से डेढ़ घंटे की अवधि वाले 259 ऑडियो कैसेट रिकॉर्ड किए गए जिन से लगभग 9000 पृष्ठों का अत्यंत मूल्यवान इतिवृत्त तैयार हुआ।
इसका एक अंश, हिंदी का मौखिक इतिहास शीर्षक से 4 खण्डों में प्रकाशित है।
इन साक्षात्कारों में साहित्यकारों की स्मृतियों, साहित्यिक विवादों, बहसों और हलचल का एक ऐसा ब्यौरा एकत्र किया गया है जो हिंदी के परिवेश का एक महत्वपूर्ण दस्तावेज है। यह दस्तावेज बीसवीं सदी के साहित्यिक परिवेश और साहित्यकारों का वस्तुपरक ब्यौरा तो है ही, साथ ही यह साहित्यकारों के अंतर्द्वंद और उनकी आंतरिक बुनावट का रंग बिरंगा जायज़ा भी है।

यह छोटे शहर में स्थापित ऐसे डिग्री कॉलेज की कहानी है जिसके पास से रेलवे लाइन गुजरती है। इसलिए विद्यार्थी अपने पीरियड के विषय से अधिक उस ओर से गुजरने वाली ट्रेन के समय की जानकारी रखते हैं। कॉलेज 'को-एड' है इसलिए लड़कियाँ भी पढ़ती हैं। अन्य विषयों के लड़कों को यह अफसोस है कि लड़कियों की संख्या बायोलोजी या सायकोलोजी में ही अधिक क्यों है? कॉलेज में लड़कियाँ दो-चार के समूह में या अकेले होने पर रिक्शे से कॉलेज आना सुरक्षित महसूस करती हैं। ऐसे में अगर कोई लड़की अपने कॉलेज के पहले ही दिन अकेले पैदल चलते हुए कॉलेज आती है, तो इसकी चर्चा लड़कियों से अधिक लड़कों के बीच में होना स्वाभाविक है। ...और तब कोई भी चर्चा जोर नहीं पकड़ती है, जब कोई व्याख्याता या लेक्चरर कॉलेज के आसपास के अपने खेत पर घूमते-घूमते मिट्टी सने अपने जूतों या चप्पलों में ही सीधे क्लास में आ जाए। लेकिन जब कोई वेस्पा स्कूटर खरीद लेता हो, चाहे वह कोई प्रोफेसर ही क्यों न हो, तो चर्चा होने लगती है। यही चर्चा तब जोर पकड़ लेती है जब फलाना सर का फलाना रंग वाला वेस्पा ढिकाना सर जी के घर के सामने रुका हुआ हो, जब ढिकाना सर शहर से बाहर गए हुए हों। कॉलेज में जब छात्र परिषद के चुनाव की घोषणा होती है, राजनीति गर्माती है और उसी में बाहरी तत्वों का भी दखल बढ़ता है। कॉलेज के सही सोच वाले प्रोफेसर और विद्यार्थी मिलकर क्या कॉलेज को राजनीति के अखाड़ा बनने से बचा पाते हैं?
