AarvaHow John Coltrane is my bridge between two loves – jazz and Carnatic musicWhere does a jazz solo go when the chord changes stop and a steady drone begins?Jazz history usually remembers John Coltrane for pushing his saxophone through punishing, high-speed chord changes. Le trompettiste Terence Blanchard et le saxophoniste Ravi Coltrane ont décidé de revitaliser un répertoire historique avec la révérence qui s’impose. Entre 1955 et 1960, deux esprits libre...

Straight No Chaser - A Jazz ShowPodcast 934: A Conversation with Dezron Douglas about Tomasz Stańko and more Tomasz Stańko – one of Europe’s most original and beloved jazz musicians – was born on July 11, 1942, in Rzeszów, Poland, and he passed away in Warsaw on July 29, 2018. In many ways, his life traced the course of modern jazz in Europe, beginning with his tenure – when barely into his twenties – in the band of the great Polish composer-pianist Krzysztof Komeda, through his association as a leader with the iconic German art-house label ECM Records that would produce a dozen masterful albums up to his final release, December Avenue, in 2017..

Heavy Metal BebopJack DeJohnetteIf you're discussing the early intersection of jazz, rock and related styles, Miles Davis is an unavoidable name, and one of the players most directly responsible for helping Miles achieve his early breakthroughs in that area was Jack DeJohnette. While DeJohnette has never left the world of straight-ahead jazz and has also remained engaged with the avant-garde, this in-between zone that he explored with Miles in the late '60s and early '70s has remained a constant fascination for the drummer and pianist, from bands like Compost and Gateway right up to more recent projects like Hudson and...

But the operative word is “fancy.” As Connors describes it, percussion ensembles are the mad scientists of the music world. Any object in the world is a potential instrument. And when they’ve run out of objects, they invent more. (Fun fact: Third Coast sometimes works with actual scientists at the University of Notre Dame where they are ensemble in res...

Straight No Chaser - A Jazz ShowPodcast 527: Wrapping Up the Portland Jazz Festival wth Don LucoffIn 2016, it is safe to say that there are jazz festivals, and then there are jazz festivals. Many events slap the word “jazz” in the title, even though the acts they are presenting may only peripherally have anything to do with jazz – Blues, R&B and Classic Soul headliners are all too common.
Other jazz festivals are narrow in their presenting scope – think the smooth jazz and soul jazz that gets presented each winter in the popular Berks Jazz Fest in Reading, Pennsylvania. There is nothing wrong with that festival – in fact, it gets bigger and better every year...
