Weak Lensing Tomographic Redshift Distribution Inference for the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program three-year shape catalogue
Weak Lensing Tomographic Redshift Distribution Inference for the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program three-year shape catalogue by Markus Michael Rau et al. on Wednesday 30 November We present posterior sample redshift distributions for the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Weak Lensing three-year (HSC Y3) analysis. Using the galaxies' photometry and spatial cross-correlations, we conduct a combined Bayesian Hierarchical Inference of the sample redshift distributions. The spatial cross-correlations are derived using a subsample of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) with accurate redshift information available up to a photometric redshift of $z < 1.2$. We derive the photometry-based constraints using a combination of two empirical techniques...

The Dark Energy Survey Year 3 high redshift sample: Selection, characterization and analysis of galaxy clustering
The Dark Energy Survey Year 3 high redshift sample: Selection, characterization and analysis of galaxy clustering by C. Sánchez et al. on Wednesday 30 November The fiducial cosmological analyses of imaging galaxy surveys like the Dark Energy Survey (DES) typically probe the Universe at redshifts $z < 1$. This is mainly because of the limited depth of these surveys, and also because such analyses rely heavily on galaxy lensing, which is more efficient at low redshifts. In this work we present the selection and characterization of high-redshift galaxy samples using DES Year 3 data, and the analysis of their galaxy clustering measurements. In particular, w...

The uncertain interstellar medium of high-redshift quiescent galaxies: Impact of methodology
The uncertain interstellar medium of high-redshift quiescent galaxies: Impact of methodology by Raphaël Gobat et al. on Tuesday 29 November How much gas and dust is contained in high-redshift quiescent galaxies (QGs) is currently an open question with relatively few and contradictory answers, as well as important implications for our understanding of the nature of star formation quenching processes at cosmic noon. Here we revisit far-infrared (FIR) observations of the REQUIEM-ALMA sample of six z = 1.6 - 3.2 QGs strongly lensed by intermediate-redshift galaxy clusters. An Effective Bias Expansion for 21 cm Cosmology in Redshift Space
An Effective Bias Expansion for 21 cm Cosmology in Redshift Space by Wenzer Qin et al. on Tuesday 29 November A near-future detection of the 21cm signal from the epoch of reionization will provide unique opportunities to probe the underlying cosmology, provided that such cosmological information can be extracted with precision. To this end, we further develop effective field theory (EFT) inspired techniques for the 21cm brightness temperature field during the epoch of reionization, incorporating renormalized bias and a treatment of redshift space distortions. Notably, we confirm that in redshift space, measures of the 21cm brightness, e.g the power spectrum, should...

Cosmology from Galaxy Redshift Surveys with PointNet
Cosmology from Galaxy Redshift Surveys with PointNet by Sotiris Anagnostidis et al. on Thursday 24 November In recent years, deep learning approaches have achieved state-of-the-art results in the analysis of point cloud data. In cosmology, galaxy redshift surveys resemble such a permutation invariant collection of positions in space. These surveys have so far mostly been analysed with two-point statistics, such as power spectra and correlation functions. The usage of these summary statistics is best justified on large scales, where the density field is linear and Gaussian. However, in light of the increased precision expected from upcoming surveys, the analysis of...

Redshift requirements for cosmic shear with intrinsic alignment
Redshift requirements for cosmic shear with intrinsic alignment by Silvan Fischbacher et al. on Wednesday 23 November Intrinsic alignment (IA) modelling and photometric redshift estimation are two of the main sources of systematic uncertainty in weak lensing surveys. We investigate the impact of redshift errors and their interplay with different IA models. Generally, errors on the mean $\delta_z$ and on the width $\sigma_z$ of the redshift bins can both lead to biases in cosmological constraints. We find that such biases can, however, only be partially resolved by marginalizing over $\delta_z$ and $\sigma_z$. For Stage-III surveys, $\delta_z$...

Properties beyond mass for unresolved haloes across redshift and cosmology using correlations with local halo environment
Properties beyond mass for unresolved haloes across redshift and cosmology using correlations with local halo environment by Sujatha Ramakrishnan et al. on Wednesday 23 November The structural and dynamic properties of the dark matter halos, though an important ingredient in understanding large-scale structure formation, require more conservative particle resolution than those required by halo mass alone in a simulation. This reduces the parameter space of the simulations, more severely for high-redshift and large-volume mocks which are required by the next-generation large sky surveys. Here, we incorporate redshift and cosmology dependence into an algorithm that assigns accurate halo properties such as concentration...

Investigating the Evolution of Amati Parameters with Redshift
Investigating the Evolution of Amati Parameters with Redshift by Meghendra Singh et al. on Wednesday 23 November Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) are among the brightest objects in the Universe and hence can be observed up to a very high redshift. Properly calibrated empirical correlations between intensity and spectral correlations of GRBs can be used to estimate the cosmological parameters. However, the possibility of the evolution of GRBs with the redshift is a long-standing puzzle. In this work, we used 162 long-duration GRBs to determine whether GRBs below and above a certain redshift have different properties. The GRBs are split into two groups...

Investigating the Evolution of Amati Parameters with Redshift by Meghendra Singh et al. on Tuesday 22 November Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) are among the brightest objects in the Universe and hence can be observed up to a very high redshift.

Redshift requirements for cosmic shear with intrinsic alignment
Redshift requirements for cosmic shear with intrinsic alignment by Silvan Fischbacher et al. on Tuesday 22 November Intrinsic alignment (IA) modelling and photometric redshift estimation are two of the main sources of systematic uncertainty in weak lensing surveys.

Integral-Field Spectroscopy of High-Redshift Galaxies: Implications for Early Galaxy Evolution
Several lines of evidence suggest that the most active phase of galaxy evolution, especially in the most massive systems, was largely completed by $z\sim 1$. This results, e.g., from the observation that the most massive galaxies at low redshift have very old stellar populations ($\sim 10$ Gyr) and very little gas to fuel subsequent star formation. Similarly, active galactic nuclei (AGN) were more numerous and brighter in the early universe. Ultimately, the direct observation of high-redshift galaxies will be the only way to understand which processes shaped the universe we see today, in spite of the rich ``fossil'' data sets...

The Evolution of the Tully-Fisher Relation at Redshift z~1
The power of the Tully-Fisher relation as a tool of observational cosmology has long been acknowledged. However, all attempts of unravelling the evolution of disc galaxies at high redshift have proven inconclusive. We demonstrate how rotation curves measured at the rest-wavelength of H_alpha can successfully shed some light unto the topic. Our sample of 21 galaxies at a mean redshift of z=0.9, the most distant sample so far, consists of mainly large isophotally selected late disc galaxies comparable to the Milky Way. These are amongst the largest in terms of disc scale lengths even compared to local galaxies. From this...
