Richard Bartle on Beginnings
If you’ve ever played a MMORPG, then much of what you experienced has its roots in the work of Richard Bartle. The co-creator of MUD - Multi-User Dungeon - in the late 1970s, Bartle has influenced designers of virtual worlds since then and is the go-to resource for academic insight in that field. Many have found Dr Bartle through his ideas on Player Types, which show us not only that there are many different motivations to play but that those reasons can shift for a player during extended play, like MMORPGs. Join us as we explore the past, pre...

A Few Thoughts on MMOs
Recently, I finished reading the book Designing Virtual Worlds by Richard Bartle. Made by the creator of MUD (widely considered to be the first MMO), it goes over best practices for creating a persistent, multiplayer experience. One thing I noticed about DVW right out the gate, however, is that it’s pretty old — so old, in fact, that the book came out just one year (!) before World of Warcraft, the game now considered to be the ultimate template in MMO-crafting. This antiquity made me curious… just how much have MMOs changed? Original blog post: https://jacob-robinson.com/2022/08/29/a-few...

Episode 549: Heidi Bartle, Author “When Mommy Feels Sad”
My friend Heidi Bartle (Active LDS, Mother of 5, BYU Grad) shares her story of waves of unexplained sadness which led to a diagnosis of depression and a further diagnosis in 2012 of bipolar. With the encouragement of a therapist, Heidi opened up to her children (ages 5 – 15 at the time) about her mental illness. That helped reduce the shame and sigma and normalized having a mental illness (just like having an allergy or asthma). That led to Heidi to write a groundbreaking children’s book called “When Mommy Feels Sad: A Mother’s Journey Through Depression” which is at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com...

Vol.1
That’s it. 公众号:LateLate专栏听友群:添加小助手chichirosie(备注“播客”)

What on Earth is Going on?
...with Gamification
We often see video games as a form of consumer entertainment—an escape from reality, not that different from watching TV or reading a book. But the structure of games are perhaps fundamental to what it means to be human. By playing them, we can learn to be and rehearse as doctors, pilots, engineers, lawyers, and more.
