The Comic's Comic Presents Last Things First
Ruby Karp
Ruby Karp made her debut on the Upright Citizens Brigade stage when most kids her age were barely out of kindergarten. By the age of 8, Ruby had appeared on Amy Poehler's Smart Girls at the Party webseries and had become a regular monologist for the UCB's premier improv showcase, ASSSSCAT. At 10 she began writing columns for the website, Hello Giggles, and at 13, she went viral for writing about how kids her age were most definitely not on Facebook. Now 26, she has released her first comedy special, Ruby Karp: I Don't Trust Adults, on VEEPS. She caught up with me...

HOW TO: Take Your Show to Edinburgh and Beyond (w/ Britt Berke)
Director Britt Berke is back on the pod! Since we spoke with her last year, Britt has been BUSY— she most recently directed Ruby Karp’s solo special I DON’T TRUST ADULTS, premiering on VEEPS September 10th. We get into the unique challenges of directing a stand-up special versus theatre (and where the lines between the two blur), including how to manage blocking for stage/film. We also dive deep into Britt’s experience directing Julia Atkin’s CRYING AT MY PODIATRIST, a body-horror solo show she was brought on to direct for the Edinburgh Fringe. She and Jul...

HOW TO: Make and Sell a Stand-Up Special (w/ Ruby Karp)
This week, we sit down with comedian Ruby Karp! We briefly recap Ruby's unconventional childhood (for more on that, listen to our first episode with her!); how growing up with a single mom ended up with the early UCB improvisers essentially serving as her babysitters. Her solo show, I Don’t Trust Adults, draws from that experience — exploring what it’s like to grow up surrounded by adults, growing up way too fast in some ways and not at all in others. After a successful run at Soho Theatre in NYC, Ruby filmed the show as a standup special, and we...

Ruby Karp (Veeps) is a multi-talent but I guess just not signing according to her… she comes on to share her experience at the world renowned performing arts school LaGuardia and what some might consider abusive (but effective….) tactics used on children to get the best emotional performance out of them. I never thought it was that hard to make a 14 year old cry personally but it’s great to hear how much thought went into it, particularly from one teacher who bullied Ruby from the first day of school. Please tune IN for her special “I Don’t Tr...
