Still teaching his disciples, Jesus speaks figuratively about His ensuing death and resurrection. In doing so, He makes them aware of the grief they will face, but the inevitability of that grief being turned to lasting and full joy. The same way birth is a painful process that ends in great joy, Jesus’ atoning death is excruciating for both Him and His followers. Nevertheless, unshakeable joy dawns with His resurrection.

Jesus has just let His disciples know that hard times are ahead for both Himself and His followers. Jesus moves out of the realm of metaphor and brings to the forefront His perfect love for us. Again, Jesus uses few words to portray the weighty realities of His commitment to us evidenced by His sacrifice for us, our love for Him expressed in our obedience to Him, and His eternal, unshakeable joy becoming our own everlasting joy. This week we’ll look at what it means to know, love, and trust Jesus, as well as how to love others like Him.

Psalm 51 is David’s prayer penitence, and serves well as a model for all who experience the guilt of shame, and seek to be forgiven and restored by the Lord.

In Psalm 42 we can learn how God enters into our sadness and strife, and how we can interact with him in the midst of it.
