मध्येच तिला तिच्या नवऱ्याचा कॉल आला होता म्हणून ती गर्दीतून वाट काढत बोलण्यासाठी बाजूला निघाली, हातात वाईनचा भरलेला ग्लास घेऊन.
“हॅलो, स्वप्नील? थोडं जोरात बोल. मला ऐकू येत नाहीये अरे.” ती नशा चढलेल्या आवाजात त्याला बोलली. मागून डिजेचा आवाज येतच होता अजून.
तो पलीकडून जोराने तिला बोलण्याचा प्रयत्न करत होता, “अगं बारा वाजून गेलेत केव्हाचे. तू कधी निघणार आहेस?”
“बस्स आणखी थोडा वेळ. मग मी निघेन स्वप्नील.” ती जोरजोराने त्याला म्हणाली.
“लवकर निघ यार. मला काळजी वाटतेय तुझी. एकतर तो रस्ता खूप निर्जन आहे.” तो मग काळजीच्या सुरात तिला म्हणाला.
“आता बाबा वाला मोड नको अॅक्टिवेट करू प्लीज. मी निघते लगेच. डोन्ट वरी.” ती काहीशा नाखुशीतच म्हणाली आणि तिने कॉल ठेवून दिला.
हातातील वाईनच्या ग्लासचे चुसके घेत ती मग नाचत नाचत गर्दीत सामील झाली आणि पुन्हा पार्टीची मौज लुटू लागली.

दुर्गे दुर्घट भारी
रात्री उशिरापर्यंत समीक्षा जागी होती. अश्रूंनी भरलेल्या डोळ्यांनी ती लॅपटॉपमधील जुने फोटो पाहत होती आणि जणू आपल्या भूतकाळातच हरवून गेली होती. भूतकाळ हा असा असतो ज्याच्या चांगल्या आठवणी माणसाला सदैव मोरपंखांच्या गुदगुल्या देऊन जातात तर वाईट आठवणी मोराच्याच पायांच्या नखांचे खोल ओरखडे देऊन जातात.ज्यांच्या जखमा तर भरून येतील; पण आठवणी कायमच वेदना देत राहतील.
लॅपटॉप झाकून ठेवून ती झोपण्यासाठी आडवी झाली खरी; पण काही केल्या तिला झोपच येईना. ती आपली कूस सतत बदलत राहिली पण आईची ती वाक्ये तिच्या मनःचक्षूवरती सतत पिंगा घालत होती- ‘नवरात्रीच्या तोंडावर साक्षात महिषासुरमर्दिनीच प्रकटली की काय पुढ्यात- तर लोक माझ्या लेकीला दुर्गेचा अवतार म्हणतील.’
रात्रीच्या त्या विचाराने तिची पार झोप खराब करून टाकली होती. सकाळी उठल्यावर तिचे डोके अगदी जड झाले होते. अजूनही तिच्या कानांत एकदम हळू आवाजात तिला ती वाक्ये ऐकु येतच असल्याचा सतत भास होत होता.
ती मग मनाशीच बोलू लागली- ‘का सतावताहेत मला ही वाक्ये? त्यानंतर ही काही पहिली नवरात्र नाही माझी, मग आता याच वेळी असं का होतंय मला? नक्कीच विधात्याची काही योजना असेल यामागे. काहीतरी करवून घ्यायचं असेल त्याला माझ्याकडून. काय समे, कुठल्या युगात वावरते आहेस तू? हं, कदाचित मीच जरा जास्त विचार करतेय. नाही नाही हे थांबलं पाहिजे.’
पण काही केल्या ती वाक्ये तिचा पिच्छा सोडायला तयार नव्हती. नवरात्रोत्सव सुरू झाला, घरात घटस्थापना झाली; पण समीक्षा?
तिचा प्रत्येक दिवस उजडत होता तो त्या वाक्यांनी आणि त्याच वाक्यांनी तो मावळतही होता. आपलं आयुष्यं जणू एका चक्रात अडकल्यासारखे पुन्हा पुन्हा तिथेच येतेय असं तिला वाटायला लागलं होतं. दोन वर्षांपूर्वीची समीक्षा आणि आत्ताची समीक्षा दोघी एकमेकींभोवती फिरत होत्या. जणू त्यांनी नवरात्रीच्या सणात फुगड्यांचा फेरच धरला होता!

मॅरेज मटेरियल
नुकताच ग्रामसेवक झालो होतो आणि पंढरपुरकडच्या दोन गावी रुजूही झालो होतो. आटपाडीहून रोज ये जा करणं शक्य नसल्यामुळे पंढरपुरातच सांगोला चौकात स्वेरीच्या विद्यार्थ्यांसोबत तिथे मी स्वतःला अॅडजस्ट करून घेतले होते.
आता स्वेरीचे विद्यार्थी म्हटले तर त्यांची डोळ्यांपुढे एक छबी राहते उभी. पायांत बूट, एकसारखा युनिफॉर्म, गळ्यात टाय आणि वेळेचे बंधन. पण मी तर त्यांच्यासोबतच राहत असल्यामुळे मला आणखी थोडं जास्तीचंच माहिती!
सतत त्या कडक शिस्तीची तक्रार करणारे, उठ की सूट कारकुनी काम करत बसलेले, रविवारच्या दिवशी कॉलेजात जाताना त्याचा उद्धार करणारे, सतत काही ना काही दंड भरणारे. विशेष म्हणजे कॉलेज गॅदरिंगला नाचताना मुला-मुलींच्या हातांचा परस्परांना स्पर्श होऊ नये म्हणून एकमेकांच्या हातात रुमाल देऊन नाचणारे. म्हणजे धन विद्युत प्रभार आणि ऋण विद्युत प्रभार यांच्या दरम्यान इलेक्ट्रॉन वाहायचेच नाहीत कधी! मी गेलो होतो ना एक- दोनदा पहायला. चोरूनच! पण त्यातही जे काही सुपर कंडक्टर असायचे त्यांना खरी दाद दिली पाहिजे! आणि इतकं सगळं असून पण अख्ख्या सोलापूर विद्यापीठात आपल्या शिस्तीचा नी गुणवत्तेचा डंका वाजवणारे असे तिथले विद्यार्थी!
खोली मोठी असल्यामुळे त्या चौघांसोबत साधून घ्यायला मला तशी फारशी काही अडचण झाली नाही. नाही म्हटलं तर त्यांच्या त्या रायटप आणि असाईनमेंटचा पसरा खूपच व्हायचा; पण चालायचं! इंजिनिअरिंगचे विद्यार्थी म्हटलं की ती बाब दुर्लक्षित केलेली केव्हाही चांगली. नाहीतर मला भीती असायचीच की इतक्या सगळ्या रद्दीत ते मला कधी भरून नेतील आणि विकून येतील हे मलाच काय पण तिकडे आटपाडीला राहणाऱ्या माझ्या घरच्यांना देखील ठाऊक होणार नाही.
एकदा तर त्यांनी कहरच केला. गावकऱ्यांचे दाखले मी माझ्या चटईवर ठेवून आंघोळीला गेलो होतो. गेले ना घेऊन हे लेकाचे आणि असाईनमेंट म्हणून जमाही करून आले. खरा कहर तो नव्हताच मुळी. तो तेव्हा झाला जेव्हा त्यांनी त्यावर शिक्षकाच्या स्वाक्षऱ्या घेऊन ते परत देखील आणले! आता गावकऱ्यांना हे असले दाखले देणार होतो का मी?
मी तर त्यांना कधी कधी फिरकी घेताना मोहब्बते पिक्चरातील त्या चार पोरांची उपमा द्यायचो. हा, आता त्यांच्या आयुष्यात तशा नट्या नव्हत्या तेव्हा कोणी! असतीलही; पण कॉलेजच्या त्या शिस्तीपुढे त्या कधी पुढे आल्याही नसतील. पण मी मात्र त्यातला शाहरुख मुळीच नव्हतो बरं. कारण आपल्या डोक्यावरील त्या काळ्याभोर जंगलाला समोरून अगदी डावीकडून नी उजवीकडून समान तोड लागली असल्याची चांगलीच कल्पना मला होतीच!
पण वाटायचं कधी कधी. इंजिनिअरिंग करायला हवं होतं; पण जेव्हा त्याच इंजिनिअर पोरांचे बाप आपल्याकडे दाखले मागायला अगदी नामदेव पायरीपर्यंत भेटायला यायचे तेव्हा मात्र मी माझ्या त्या विचाराला अगदी पुढेच म्हणजे चंद्रभागेतच जलसमाधी द्यायचो! कित्येकदा!
कारण, या ना त्या कारणाने सतत इंजिनिअरिंग न केल्याचे शल्य वाटत राहायचं. आपण ढ होतो असाही काही भाग नव्हता. बारावी सायन्सच्या क्लासमधील सुजाता. माझी क्रश म्हणा हवी तर. आम्ही मात्र तिला तेव्हा मॅम म्हणायचो. हुशार होती म्हणून की काय कुणास ठाऊक. बाकीच्यांचे मला माहीत नाही; पण माझ्यासाठी ती मॅरेज मटेरियल अर्थात मॅम होती. आणि म्हणून मी पण मॅम म्हणायचो.
तर तिने नंतर स्वेरीला इंजिनिअरिंगसाठी अॅडमिशन घेतले होते. तेही एक कारण असावं बहुतेक सारखं सारखं शल्य वाटण्याचे. पण आता एकंदरीत तिथले वातावरण कळाल्यावर मात्र माझ्या त्या शल्याची तीव्रता काहीशी कमी झाली होती. म्हणजे फार फार तर मी तिच्या हाती रुमाल थामवण्यापर्यंत मजल मारली असती. मी काही सुपर कंडक्टर नव्हतोच मुळी!
“चला, चला. आटपाडी आटपाडी.” एसटी कंडक्टरच्या जोरदार आरोळीने मी भानावर आलो. एसटीच्या दारातून खाली झुकत तो जोरजोरात ओरडत होता.
आज महिन्याची एकादशी असल्याने गाडीत गर्दीही जोरदार होती. अर्थातच मी मागे बसलो होतो. तसंही मी एसटीत फार तर दहा मिनिटे जागा असतो. धावत्या एसटीसोबत लगेचच माझी झोपही धावून येते आणि. . .
