It's Time to Brand Colts
As fall is quickly approaching, Scott discusses this year's foals and getting them ready for branding. He reflects back on one filly that was born bay and didn't drum up any interest. Now she is shedding out a bay roan and people went crazy over her. So many folks out there will overlook a horse and it's talent or potential completely based on color, and Scott wants to remind everyone to keep an open mind to the job you're wanting to accomplish and to find the right fit, not necessarily the right color for the job.

Choose Your Mares Wisely -Extended Episode
I’ve talked to a lot of ol timers that bred horses and always told me the second dam was the most important part of the pedigree. I’m real big on maternal lines. In fact, I believe any decent sire will do, but your mare is your horse. Maternal lines are everything. Every great stud has a great momma and every great mare has a great momma. This also explains why sometimes good and bad traits seem to skip generations.

Hard work looks different to everyone. Scott explains a story where two boys wake up on Christmas day to a tree that has a ton of horse manure under it. One boy is upset at the sight of the manure and pouts. The other goes to digging through the manure and says "With all this manure, there must be a pony in here somewhere!"So when you are looking at work or opportunities, are you griping or digging for the pony?

Getting Old
It happens a little bit more each day to all of us- getting old. Are you looking forward to getting old and retiring, or do you plan to keep working past retirement age? Scott's family is full of people who continued to stay busy late into their years and ended up living into their late 80's and 90's. He also knows people who retired at 65 and then passed away less than 10 years later. Of course, it's not the number of years you've lived, but the life you've lived in the years you've been given. In the excitement of The American Rodeo taking place this weekend, Scott is excited about those who are able to compete for life-changing amounts of money and what that means for our industry, as well as what we can learn from those that don't win. You learn to move on from the losses to give yourself a fresh start at the next one to improve on. When we are working on improving, that means studying and analyzing the event you compete in. Real Ranch Horses
After being in Montana at the Billing Livestock Sale, Scott has noticed a new trend rising in the sale rink; fat, shiny, "ranch horses" with long manes and tails. We've all been there, and probably longed for, the horse in the ring that is shiny as a diamond, slicked out even in the middle of winter, and plump and stout under saddle. Fact is, when you're going to a sale to purchase a horse to be used, those shiny horses probably haven't had to work like the ones that are missing part of their mane (caught in dallies...

Old Fashioned Family Values
Scott is in Montana for another visit to the Billings Livestock Sale. He and his family have been attending for nearly 20 years and they look forward to providing quality horses to the public and spending time with friends that they've acquired over the years. While they were visiting, a friend of theirs requested that Scott speak on family values and how their family has managed over the years. It's not the way everyone chooses to run their family, but it's what has worked for the Hulme's and they are proud of their choices.

Your Kids Are Not Equal... And That's Okay!
Do your kids have to receive the same of everything? Where one football turns into two, or on horse turns into 3 so that everyone gets one? That can be extremely problematic, especially in a world where everyone who participates wins. Scott believes if we don't start encouraging our kids or just people in general to be okay with being an individual, that we will begin to lose sight of the things that make each of us unique!

What Owns You and What Do You Own?
At the end of the day, we are either in charge of our own lives, or the things we "own" actually own us and dictate how we get to live our lives. If simplifying your life will allow you to live a better life, why not cut out the things that are running you? Vehicle loans, home loans, horse pedigree, keeping up with the Jones's can all hinder us from living the life we truly dream of.

Building From Scratch
While sitting in his home-built shop, building halters and hackamores, Scott thinks about our ancestors from about 150 years ago when they made the decision to move and start from scratch. They didn't have the tools and the access to stores like we do today, and sometimes just the job of clearing the land they claimed would kill people in the process. Scott wants his children to be able to build something with their bare hands, and that's why they all worked together to make the cabin/shop that Scott builds his hackamores in today.

Ranching is tough work. It can be long days and even longer nights, but it usually leads to family operations having a lot to be proud of. While gathering calves to take to a sale, Scott has the benefit of being able to work alongside his boys. In today's episode he shares some stories that illustrate that "ranching ain't always roses." Some neighbor's cows got mixed in with Scott's one time, and they had quite the adventure getting these sorted in and able to be picked up by their neighbor, especially with a particularly nasty bull.

Husband Horse vs Wife Horse
When you have horses to sell, you will inevitably deal with a lot of questions from potential buyers. A pet peeve that Scott has is folks looking for a "husband horse," simply because the term means so many things to many different types to people. For Scott, and many ranchers, a husband horse means that a horse can be prickly and only the husband can handle him until the horse proves himself otherwise. For some, the term husband horse is now synonymous with a kid's horse or a mother-in-law horse, when the term that should be used is gentle...
