Stories[S1-E11]【清濁之間】Yamaha掛川工廠見聞（三）【清濁之間】Yamaha掛川工廠見聞（三）在看過Yamaha鋼琴生產基地「掛川工廠」的展示間後，我們開始循序參觀產線上的每一站。文章插圖薄如蟬翼的紙圈合作夥伴下一站：調整鍵盤高度與深度沿著裝配線繼續前進，來到調整鍵盤高度與深度的工作站。這項工作在傳統工廠中，是由技師一個鍵一個鍵完成：以鋁製木製的水平工具量測每一鍵高度是否一致，太低的鍵在其下加上紙圈墊高，太高的則將底下的紙圈抽掉。紙圈有多種不同厚度，最薄的紙圈近百分之一公釐，堪比蟬翼，經驗熟練的技師才能很快地判斷要用哪一種厚度的紙。高度確定之後，技師以定規輔助按壓琴鍵來判斷其深度是否理想，若不理想則按先前紙圈加減的方式來調整。每一個鍵都需要如此反覆測試、調整，所以88個鍵全部完成需要一段不短的時間。在此廠區中，我很意外這件工作是由機器進行：鍵盤先通過雷射儀器來測量其水平高度，接著一台罩子般的機器覆蓋整個鍵盤，幾分鐘後罩子打開，全部工作就完成了。大約猜想罩子內發生的事：機械按壓鍵盤確認深度、將全部鍵由鍵床移開、將高度深度所需的紙圈一次全部墊好（至少數百個紙圈要放）、將鍵放回鍵床。雖然不曉得到底實際如何運作，但是光看它的工作成果就令人吃驚，速度是傳統的百倍以上。任何工作只要能標準化，就能以機械完成，我深深感受到這件事。文章插圖調整工作，翻攝自工廠文宣品。合作夥伴調整運動機構接下來看到的，是關於運動機構的調整，這裡就沒有機器的身影了（鬆了口氣）。技師們在幾個鄰近的工作站中，按壓琴鍵，觀察並感覺其運動狀態，然後以特定工具伸進機構中調整。鋼琴的調整非常重要，它影響著彈奏者的手感，這些調整當然都有標準可循，但這些工作卻沒有自動化，我相信其中的理由第一是成本太高，要以小機械臂伸進複雜的機構中、判斷需要什麼工具、將工具對準調整處再操作，這種科幻片般的機械如果存在真實世界，成本必定非同小可；第二是這些調整標準彼此牽動，要將之標準化很複雜，不容易簡化到機器能操作的程度；第三，也是我認為真正最重要的因素：這些標準的最終判斷是「人」，當一個鍵按起來不理想的時候，有很多地方可以去修正，有經驗的技師可以在各處做出稍微的調整，甚至是逾越標準之外，綜合起來就能得到符合標準的按鍵感覺，這種權衡卻是機器不擅長的。機器無法判斷的綜合觸鍵感機器也許可能把每一處都調到它的正確範圍內，但萬一全部綜合起來時的觸鍵感仍不理想時，機器就無能為力了，它不會思考如何改善，也不可能逾越標準回頭去把先前已經完成的「正確調整」改「錯」，這種靈活權衡是機器無法辦到的事。如同調音一樣 和諧才是重點這讓我聯想到鋼琴調音，學習鋼琴調音，首先學習的便是「不要相信調音器，要相信自己耳朵」，為什麼？因為調音器只判斷單音頻率是否符合理論標準，但即便是每個單音都符合標準，組合起來卻不見得就是我們所期待的結果。調音的目的是得到一組和諧的音律，換句話說，是多個單音綜合的成果，當綜合的成果無法讓我們滿意時，我們會試著去更動每個單音，甚至使之稍微偏離原本的單音標準，藉此來創造最終的和諧，這種變通，就是機器所不能。在我自己的鋼琴中音域有一個音，當把它調整到與其他音和諧的狀態時，它會偏離調音器標準大約6%，6%在中音域不是一個小數目，如果以調音器為聖旨的話，甚至可以說這個音根本失準，可是如果按調音器調，它卻反而無法與其他音形成和諧的和聲，這種兩難時刻就是調音師必須權衡的關鍵點，是要相信機器呢？還是要相信自己的耳朵？答案很明顯：耳朵。因為機器並不明白我們所追求的是各音之間最終的和諧，它只知道單個單個音有沒有達標，它不會理解單音達標不過是完成最終工作的一種手段，當這個手段失效時就應該變通。機器不懂這道理，機器的強項也不在於懂這些道理，這是人類的強項。文章插圖整音工作，翻攝自工廠文宣品。合作夥伴整音與調音只能依靠人耳回到工廠，一台一台的鋼琴經過調整之後安裝止音器，然後進入最後整音與調音階段，此二工作的進行都需要技師靠耳朵確認，所以在獨立的隔音房間中進行。整音與調音工作會進行好幾次以求穩定，之後便進入最終檢查室，在這個隔音間內，經驗最老到的技師會詳細檢查每一個細節，從外觀到聲音到觸鍵，鋼琴從頭到尾被檢測一遍，未臻理想處就由資深技師直接修正。在氣候適應室進行零件的穩定通過最終檢測後，鋼琴的製造可以算是完工了，不過它們還沒準備離開工廠，它們搭著無人車繼續前進到最後一站：「氣候適應室」。那是兩間大型儲藏室，內部溫濕度分別對應歐美與亞洲氣候，儲藏室內有十幾公尺高的貨架，貨架被劃分為一格格長方形儲藏空間，當軌道車運著鋼琴來到貨架底下，鋼琴會被自動堆高機舉起，然後像抽屜一樣滑進某一格儲藏空間中，這是鋼琴在整個生產線中離開自動車的唯一時刻。離開的瞬間，忽然讓我有種「畢業了」的感慨。不過並不是真的畢業，之後它們會待在適應室中數個月甚至數年時光，讓木頭以及所有零件在設定好的溫濕度中徹底穩定，然後才被銷售到與適應室氣候相仿的目標市場。文章插圖氣候適應室，翻攝自工廠文宣品。合作夥伴徹底的自動化 Ship）、散裝貨輪（Bulk Carrier）2種，貨櫃輪是運輸家具等工業製品，會有固定的航線跟航班；散裝貨輪則是運輸如煤炭等原物料，不是以貨櫃來裝運，也沒有定期的航班跟航線。自營/租船台灣的航運三雄都是主攻貨櫃輪生意的公司。而貨櫃輪與散裝貨輪的商業模式，又可分成自營（自己買船）、租船兩種。自營是指航運公司自己買船，船上有自家的駕駛、船員負責開船，透過跟客戶收取貨櫃運費來賺錢。租船則指航運公司不需自己經營每艘船，若旗下船隊有很多艘船，可將一部分租給其他航運公司，透過收租金方式賺錢。好處是收入穩定，缺點是賺錢機會受限。目前全球前10大航商（包含台灣三雄），旗下自有船、外租船都有，只是數量的比例不同而已。國泰證期顧問處經理蔡明翰說，租船合約通常是簽1年甚至更長，期間運價飆升，無法直接反映在獲利上，若運價持續上揚，要等到合約重新簽訂，租金才能上調。蔡明翰表示，每一家船公司會根據自己的營運優勢評估，兩種營運模式沒有絕對好壞。台灣航海王強在哪？兩大指標看懂如何觀察事實上，分析一家航運公司表現除了財務數字外，主要可以參考運量、運價兩大指標。國際上使用TEU（20呎標準貨櫃）來做為運量單位，指的是一艘貨船可以運多少20呎貨櫃，一家航運公司能運送多少貨櫃數量，概念接近工廠產能，會影響到市占率；運價則關乎到該公司的營收跟獲利表現。從指標性的波羅的海貨櫃運價指數（Freightos Baltic Index, FBX）來看，今年7月時，因為發生歐洲水患，導致貨物無法順利送達港口，國際運價就飆漲到10,176美元，帶動長榮7月營收首次突破400億元大關。台灣是海運強國，根據航運市場研究機構Alphaliner排名，長榮（第7）、陽明（第9）、萬海（第10），運量都在全球前10大，三雄運力合計約占全球9.8％，約244萬TEU（20呎貨櫃）。喬慕恩表示，全球有強大航運商的國家，都曾是某個時代的製造業出口大國，因為製造業茁壯，本身有一堆貨可運，造就經濟成長，像在歐洲國家工業化的早期，誕生了馬士基（Maersk Sealand）等航商；到後來的台灣、日本，都曾因為是製造出口大國，因此有成熟的海運產業。航運業進入成本高 少有新競爭者航運業資本投資很大，一艘貨船少說要幾百萬美元起跳，背後還要有國家力量的支持，因此除了併購，很少會有新競爭者的加入，這也是航運業的特別之處。如台灣三家航運業者，各有不同的優勢與特色。長榮是台灣規模最大的民營航商，主要經營美國、遠東長程航線；亞洲到美國的航線，長榮市占就達4成。陽明同樣專攻歐美長程航線，比較不同的是背景有官股色彩。萬海則專攻亞洲航線，擁有全球貨櫃航運公司最多、最密集的亞洲市場航班。然而今年開始，因為看好美國解封所帶動的消費能量，萬海今年3月宣布，要砸下15億美元訂購13艘13,000 TEU的大型貨輪，開闢亞洲到美東航線。這也是萬海成立56年以來，首度開闢美東航線。如何降低載運成本將成為未來重點隨著股市變化，航運股價逐漸回歸修正，未來航運股的觀察重點將是如何降低每貨櫃的載運成本。大船當道時代來臨，各航運公司紛紛開始下訂上萬TEU的巨型貨輪。當一艘船可以載運的貨櫃數愈多，每個貨櫃的載運成本就會下降。規模經濟將是維持獲利的關鍵。喬慕恩分析，大船的優勢是一次可載大量貨物，但營運上易受全球景氣影響。像萬海的船型較小，雖然載的量少，卻可透過靈活調度維持獲利。至於環境面，短期內全球航運業者需面對的挑戰依舊是塞港，以及運能持續供不應求。得船、得貨櫃者得天下。航海王股價奇蹟能否續演，還得看時空環境與股民熱情在不在。而百年一遇的航運熱現象，至少讓台灣人看見本土三雄在產業裡的硬實力。 狗狗都知道！這正是匈牙利伊歐提佛斯·羅蘭大學（Eötvös Loránd University，下文簡稱羅蘭大學）的腦科學專家庫亞（Laura Cuaya）曾經有過的疑問。如今經過4年多來的研究後，她證實狗狗確實能分辨不同語言，當聽到不同語言時，牠們的腦部反應也不一樣，顯示人類最好的朋友對人的語言有一定的敏感度。從墨西哥搬到匈牙利 從西班牙語到匈牙利語大約在4年前，庫亞帶著她的兩隻狗狗坤坤（Kun 更瞭解周遭環境庫雅則是提到，研究結果顯示狗狗對人類語言的認識明顯比她猜測的還要深，而在她看來，這項能力也讓狗狗身為一個物種擁有得天獨厚地優勢，「它讓狗狗能更了解周遭環境」。老狗、長鼻子狗狗特別懂語言？但有趣的是，這種腦部活動方式的差異在「年紀較大的狗」以及「鼻子較長的狗」身上又特別明顯，顯示牠們分辨語言的能力更為出色。前者庫雅認為應該是經驗所致，畢竟年紀較大的狗聆聽飼主慣用語言的時間也比較長，但為何鼻子較長的狗分辨語言的能力也比較好，可就難倒庫亞了。未參與研究的美國康乃爾大學獸醫學院行為醫學專家霍普特（Katherine Houpt）猜測，鼻子較長的頭骨形狀在牧羊犬身上很常見，這類狗狗大多能輕易理解牧羊人下的指令，因此或許鼻子較長的狗狗分辨語言能力也較佳的關鍵就在於此。狗狗聽到的不只blah blah blah「很多人都假設我們說話時，狗狗只會聽到一堆blah blah blah 的東西，」未參與研究的英國林肯大學（University of Lincoln）動物行為專家魯特古特里奇（Holly
