‘‘రేపు సాయంత్రం నాలుగు గంటల స్లాట్‌ ఒక్కటే ఖాళీగా వుంది. బుక్‌ చేయమంటావా?’’
‘‘చేసెయ్యండి చేసెయ్యండి’’
ఇంట్లో వారికి వినిపించకుండా, లోగొంతుతో మెడికల్‌ ల్యాబ్‌ వారితో కోవిడ్‌ శాంపిల్‌ సేకరణకు అపాయింట్‌మెంటు తీసుకున్నాను.
చిన్న గదిలోంచి నాన్న దగ్గు విన్పించింది. దూసుకెళ్ళాను. ‘‘ఎలా వుంది నాన్నా. జ్వరం నెమ్మళించిందా... ’’
సమీపించబోతోంటే, ‘‘ఆగాగు. ముందెళ్ళి డబుల్‌ మాస్కు పెట్టుకురా’’ కోప్పడ్డారు.
‘‘అక్కడేం నిధులు మురిగిపోతున్నాయనీ మాటిమాటికీ పరుగెడుతున్నారు. ఆయనకేమీ కాదు. మనల్ని చంపిగాని పోరు’’ నా భార్య రయ్‌మని రెచ్చి పోతోంటే వారించాను.
‘‘ష్‌... నాన్న వింటే బాధపడతారే’’
‘‘విన్నాకైనా బుద్ధొస్తుందనే గట్టిగా మాట్లాడుతున్నా. ఆయనకి మీరొక్కరేనా కొడుకు? మీకొక్కరికేనా బాధ్యత?’’
‘‘నీకు దణ్ణం పెడతాను గాని గమ్మునుండవే. అసలే ఆయన ఆరోగ్యం దిగజారుతోందని నేను ఆందోళనపడుతోంటే, మధ్యన నీ నస ఏంటే’’ కసిరి, నాన్న గదిలోకెళ్ళాను.
ఆయన వారిస్తున్నా వినకుండా చెయ్యి పట్టుకుని చూశాను. కాలిపోతోంది.
‘‘కరోనాయేరా... నాకేం డౌటు లేదు. రుచీ పచీ తెలీడంలేదు. దగ్గు వదలటం లేదు….. ’’ నిర్లిప్తంగా అన్నారు.
‘‘టెస్ట్‌ చెయ్యకుండా అలా ఎలా ఒక నిర్ణయానికొచ్చేస్తారు? రేపు సాయంత్రం ఇంటికే వచ్చి శాంపిల్‌ తీసుకెళ్తారు. ల్యాబ్‌కెళ్తే త్వరగా అవ్వొచ్చు గాని అక్కడ చాంతాడంత క్యూ వుంటుంది. వారివల్ల మనకు ప్రమాదముండొచ్చని ఇంటికే రమ్మన్నాను’’.
‘‘నా వల్ల వాళ్ళకీ ప్రమాదం వుండొచ్చుగా! అలా ఎందుకాలోచించట్లేదో చెప్పనా? నీకు నేనే ముఖ్యం గనుక!’’ నవ్వి అన్నారు. ‘‘గత జన్మలో బంగారు పూలతో భగవంతుణ్ణి పూజించి వుంటాను. నన్ను పూలలో పెట్టి చూసుకునే కొడుకువి లభించావు!’’ నాన్న కళ్ళు మెరిశాయి గాని స్వరం గాద్గదికమయ్యింది.
‘‘ప్లీజ్‌ నాన్నా. ఎక్కువ మాట్లాడొద్దు. నిన్న డాక్టర్‌ రాసిచ్చిన మందులు శ్రద్ధగా వాడదాం. దానికి తగ్గిపోతే అదృష్టమేగా!’’ వేడినీళ్ళు తెచ్చిచ్చాను.
టాబ్లెట్సు వేసుకున్నాక, టెర్రేస్‌ మీదకెళ్ళి అన్నయ్యలిద్దరికీ ఫోన్‌ జేసి నా అనుమానం బయటపెట్టాను.
‘‘ఇంకా ఇంట్లో పెట్టుకున్నావేంరా, ప్రభుత్వాసుపత్రిలో చేర్చెయ్‌. వాళ్ళు బాగానే చూసుకుంటార్లే’’ అన్నాడు పెద్దన్నయ్య.
‘‘నాన్న మీద నీకొక్కడికే ప్రేమ వున్నట్టు నటిస్తుంటావుగా. నువ్వు చూసుకోక నాకెందుకు ఫోన్‌ చేశావు? నేనేం డబ్బు సర్దలేను. ఇప్పుడు రాలేను’’ అనేశాడు చిన్నన్నయ్య.
చిన్నగా నిట్టూర్చాను.
