地藏菩薩本願經稱佛名號品第九
地藏菩薩摩訶薩白佛言：
「世尊，現在未來一切眾生，若天若人，若男若女，但念得一佛名號，功德無量，何況多名。是眾生等，生時死時，自得大利，終不墮惡道。若有臨命終人，家中眷屬，乃至一人，為是病人高聲念一佛名，是命終人，除五無間罪，餘業報等悉得銷滅。是五無間罪，雖至極重，動經億劫，了不得出，承斯臨命終時，他人為其稱念佛名，於是罪中，亦漸銷滅。何況眾生自稱自念，獲福無量，滅無量罪。」
地藏菩薩 (梵語：Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva)，地藏菩薩的「大孝」和「大願」深受人們敬仰，地藏王菩薩在過去世中曾幾度救出自己在地獄受苦的母親；並在久遠劫以來就不斷發願要救度一切罪苦眾生尤其是地獄眾生。
地藏菩薩在中國與文殊、普賢、觀音菩薩，合稱為「四大菩薩」。在日本，地藏菩薩被視為旅行者、兒童的保護者，常立地藏塑像於十字路口或岔路口。

《地藏十輪經》描述地藏王菩薩：「安忍不動如大地，靜慮深密如秘藏。」意思是，無論高山流水，花草鳥獸，世間一切皆需依地才能生存，而地藏菩薩的偉大願望就像大地一樣，能穩穩地載負一切眾生，並以一切妙法幫助萬物，從痛苦的此岸解脫到光明的彼岸。人們因地藏王菩薩有著「眾生度盡、方證菩提；地獄不空、誓不成佛！」的大願，使其成為人們對於死後世界，追求解脫的仰賴。據《地藏菩薩本願經》，地藏王菩薩曾受釋迦牟尼佛的遺願，要在釋迦滅度後、彌勒佛降生成佛前的無佛之世，教化度脫墮於地獄、餓鬼、畜生、阿修羅、人、天諸道中的眾生。
地藏王菩薩和眾生的因緣非常深厚，誠心誦念地藏王菩薩超渡心咒，能得地藏王菩薩大願力、大能量的加持護佑，消業除障，增福添壽；加持超度往生的親人脫離惡道，清淨吉祥永隨。
