Et monument over danskheden – hvad kunne dog gå galt? Ikke så lidt, skulle det vise sig. I 1895 afleverede den anerkendte kunstner Louis Hasselriis den voluminøse skulptur Danmarksmonumentet. Skulpturen blev præsenteret med pomp og pragt på sin nye placering foran Statens Museum for Kunst. Men dommen var hård: Skulpturen blev straks latterliggjort og hånet.
