crazy good advice 011420
Dear Steve, I’ve been dating my high school sweetheart for about six years. We’ve both gone through ups and downs, done the long-distance thing, dealt with trust issues, and I even forgave him for being with another girl and lying to me about it while he was traveling abroad. However, recently I have been feeling less interested in continuing this relationship. He really hurt me when he cheated and I feel like I can pinpoint that as the moment our relationship began to go south. I think I want to end things. My friends tell...

There seems to be some doubt from fans that technology played a part in the Astros ability to steal signs, or that even if the team used advanced methodology, it doesn’t deter from the idea that sign-stealing has always existed and shouldn’t be punished so harshly. There’s not a single fan so naïve as to believe sign stealing hasn’t always been a part of the game, but this takes it a new level. Steal away on the signs, just don’t be so blatant about it.

Without question, the most stunning result of the Divisional Round games was Tennessee demolishing the Ravens. The Ravens owned advantages in nearly every statistical category, time of possession, first downs, 3rd down efficiency. Lamar Jackson did Lamar Jackson things, with one exception. He threw the ball way too much and made way too many errors along the way. Jackson threw 28 passes which were either incomplete or intercepted.

Surely there have to be bigger issues with the 10 and 27 Cleveland Cavaliers than the apparently viral reaction some anonymous teammates had to head coach John Beilein using the word “thugs” to describe the team’s level of play. Even more stunning is Beilein trying to stomp out this story by declaring he meant to use the word “slugs”. It’s the old double standard of what words mean when used in certain contexts and when said by certain people.

There are many ways to dealing with getting older. Some of us become complacent and accepting of the journey through time. Some do whatever it takes to battle the ongoing hands of time. There are a lot of people trying to decipher what Tom Brady meant in his Instagram post this week suggesting he’s still got a lot to prove. There’s really no great mystery. He wants to come back. Where he plays and how well he does are the only questions.

The Rooney Rule is back at the center of conversation, thanks in no small part to the actual practice of businessmen doing business. The bottom line is about the man who signs the checks and makes the decisions. It’s fine to want minorities in coaching positions, that’s something we can rationally argue about. But the culture change will begin when we all aspire to something greater. Run a front office, take over a business, hire people as you see fit. That’s real change.

The hiring of Mike McCarthy as new head coach of the Cowboys is refreshing in one sense. Over the past couple seasons, the hot trend has been for teams to look for younger coaches, guys with designs on scheming up some all-over-the place offensive philosophy. That’s had various, but mostly mixed results. McCarthy’s playcalling may look somewhat familiar to that of former coach Jason Garrett. Fans are hoping the results will be much different.

It seems almost unfair to devote a lot of time to the Patriots, considering they were beaten over the weekend by the Tennessee Titans, but it’s also unfair to simply put away the Patriots without mention of what happens next for quarterback Tom Brady. It’s possible, though I would say unlikely that his last career pass would be a Pick Six. Whatever you might think of Brady, Belichick and the Patriots, it would appear the dynasty is finally over.

This Jason Garrett fiasco in Dallas appears to have finally come to an end with reports surfacing this week that he’ll no longer be with the team. Whoever succeeds Garrett as the new coach inherits a team that looks to have a lot of talent but also a lot of questions. And what’s to come for Garrett? There’s not a lot of history to go on as far as former Cowboys coaches having success in other spots. This was an odd breakup in every sense of the word.

There’s bound to be some revisionist history tossed around when it comes to the legacy of the late David Stern, former NBA commissioner who passed away at the age of 77. For what it’s worth, the reason you know about the NBA as a global mega business is because of Stern. He took a slipshod corporation and turned it into one of the most iconic businesses in the sports world. Stern will have his share of critics. All the great ones do. He’s no different.

The hands of time are ticking on some iconic names in the NFL. While we marvel at the skill level of Drew Brees, we also note that some old-timers are having to come to terms with father time. Eli Manning doesn’t want to be a backup, Philip Rivers may be headed elsewhere, and who knows what’s happening inside the mind of Tom Brady. While several NFL head coaches probably deserved some changes to their job status, none stand out more than Freddie Kitchens. From the day he came on board as interim head coach towards the end of last season, Kitchens seemed to run the team as a playground, where the bully kid (in this case, Baker Mayfield) seemed to run the yard. What Cleveland does next is really anyone’s guess, but the team will be far better served not hiring another of Baker’s buddies.

37 bowl games. That’s what’s on tap over the next few weeks as we wrap up the college football season. I’ve long maintained there’s too many bowl games involving too many mediocre teams for people outside those programs to get excited about. So long as there’s dollars to spend and there’s TV time to be allocated, the bowl season won’t be getting any shorter. I can’t say the same about the amount of interest I’ll have in many of these games.

In what has been statistically one of his most unproductive seasons, Rivers cannot solely be blamed for the team’s 5 and 9 record, but he certainly hasn’t helped matters with 11 interceptions in his last five games. Words only have as much power as we want to give them. And whether those words are written down or spoken, it’s up to both the speaker and listener to choose how much power we give those chosen words. Janoris Jenkins used a disparaging reference when responding to a New York Giants fan over Twitter this week, and he’s taking heat for it. Perhaps deservedly so, but more important, it's another reminder that the line between sensitivity and insensitivity is a thin one indeed.

friday monologue 120619
While most fans will be consumed with college football and the NFL in the coming days, MLB’s winter meetings start next week. With that comes big name free agent moves. Pitcher Gerrit Cole is rumored to the Yankees, third baseman Anthony Rendon’s gonna get paid and the Astros will be looking for another pair of binoculars and a new way to bend the rules, allegedly.

thursday monologue 120519
I’d love to get a chance to re-do moments in time where I let myself or others down. I’d love to rewind time and have a chance to fix my own lapses in judgment. The Houston Rockets have no one but themselves to blame for blowing a double digit lead and losing a game they had no business losing. Ask San Antonio how they feel about having to replay history?

wednesday monologue 120419
There’s a lot on the line this weekend with conference championship games and the likely fallout effect those games may have on the college football playoff. For those who like some chaos in their pre-holiday festivities, you can cheer for Utah to wallop Oregon, LSU to dismantle Georgia, Oklahoma and Baylor to play a classic and Virginia to upset Clemson. That’ll create some damage.

bortstein monologue 020819
Major League Baseball announced this week that the term "Disabled List" will be changed to "Injured List". This is an absurd decision, made even more ridiculous because of a perceived reaction to terminology that doesn't exist.
