Sex, Jazz & Ax Murders - Robert Charles Riots & the Mayor of Storyville
In the late 1890’s a well-dressed man from Mississippi on the run from the law moves into New Orleans under the name of Robert Charles. By all accounts he’s a well-groomed and well-spoken man who enjoys a well fitted suit, and bowler hat. One evening he and his friend are approached by police officers. As the officers and Robert get into a scuffle, Robert is shot, but escapes returning to his home and arming himself against the police. As police Captain Day comes knocking on his door later that evening, he is met with a loaded Winchester rifle and...

T.S. Monk • Two Continents One Groove (Live) ©️ Storyville Records 2022 #bebop #swing
Bon Bon Vie (Gimme the Good Life) ©️ Storyville Records 2022 T.S. Monk - drums, percussion Helen Sung - piano Willie Williams - tenor sax Patience Higgins - alto sax Josh Evans - trumpet Kenny Davis - bass Dave Stryker - guitar The seven songs on the album are taken from two performances at two similar jazz rooms over a two-year period; three are from “Harlem’s Jazz Shrines Festival: Jazzmobile presents Minton’s Playhouse” at Ginny’s Supper Club on May 7, 2014, while others were recorded at Marians Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland on April 24, 2016. #bebop #swing

Mark Frost - Storyville
Rain-soaked streets...moss and wisteria...bad guys in the bayou. This is the setting for Mark Frost's 1992 film Storyville, a courtroom drama/thriller mixed with elements of the police procedural Frost knew all too well from his years on Hill Street Blues, a dose of Vietnamese underworld intrigue, and all filmed at the intersection of Deep South corruption and 1990s social conscience. It's messy at times and highly entertaining in others. If nothing else, watch it for James Spader and Jason Robards ("...don't forget the final courtroom fight scene!" Aidan adds.) Starring: James Spader, Joanne...

Beyond Bourbon Street, an Insider's Guide to New Orleans
The Madams, Music and Musicians of Storyville, New Orleans
Madams and Musicians - Storyville, New Orleans In 1897, New Orleans leaders created Storyville, the infamous red light district of New Orleans. For the next twenty years, Storyville was the legal center of prostitution in the Crescent City. Storyville was the workplace of madams and prostitutes. Patrons might spend an evening at Lulu White's Mahogany Hall or at Josie Arlington's place. Here, they encountered lavish furnishings, live music, ample amounts of alcohol, and sex for a price. In addition to the sex trade, Storyville was a hotbed of music and musicians. Patrons wandering down Basin Street...

Guidebooks to Sin: the Blue Books of Storyville, New Orleans In 1897, New Orleans leaders created Storyville, the infamous red light district of New Orleans. For the next twenty years, Storyville was the legal center of prostitution in the Crescent City. The blue books were small guides that listed the 'finer' bordellos and even the individual prostitutes. The idea was likely cribbed from various other blue books which noted places and people of distinction. My guest this week is Pamela Arceneaux, an author, senior librarian, and rare books curator at the Historic New Orleans...
