Despite his success in the operetta world, Suppé repeatedly strove to leave his mark in other, completely different, musical domains. We can see this, especially in his sacred works, many of which he composed in his later years. The Requiem in D minor can be regarded as the apotheosis of his sacred oeuvre. He dedicated the work to his friend and mentor Franz Pokorny, who directed several theaters simultaneously (in Vienna, Baden, Oedenburg, and Pressburg). It comprises seven movements, which together last 65 to 80 minutes, making this work Brahms's longest composition. A German Requiem is sacred but non-liturgical, and unlike a long tradition of the Latin Requiem, A German Requiem, as its title states, is a Requiem in the German language.
