11. oktobris. Postošie Buharddienas plūdi Ziemeļfrīzijā 1634. gadā
Vieni no postošākajiem plūdiem Eiropas vēsturē piemeklēja Ziemeļfrīziju – zemes mūsdienu Vācijā pie Dānijas robežas – 1634. gada 11. oktobra naktī. Vētrā satrakojusies Ziemeļjūra pārrāva dambjus un iznīcināja 15 000 dzīvību un vairākus desmitus kvadrātkilometru lielo Štrandas salu. Līdz ar 14. gadsimta sākumu Ziemeļu puslodē iestājās tā sauktais Mazais ledus laikmets. Gada vidējā temperatūra nokritās par nepilnu Celsija grādu, ko klimatologi vērtē kā mērenu temperatūras pazemināšanos, tomēr dažus reģionus klimata izmaiņas skāra visai būtiski. Viens no šādiem reģioni...

Some of the most successful entrepreneurs are immigrants. Many of them are billionaires. And the companies they founded have created trillions of dollars in value for shareholders, employees, and customers alike. There’s Google co-founder Sergey Brin, born in communist Russia. The man who could take us to Mars, Elon Musk, from South Africa. Arianna Huffington, founder of the eponymous news site, from Greece. (And the list goes on.) There are lesser-known names, too, of course. Like Jenny Q. Ta, CEO of Sqeeqee, who’s from Vietnam. Tomas Gorny, CEO of Nextiva, from Poland. Claudia Mirz...

20. novembris. Kašalots uzbrūk vaļu mednieku kuģim un to nogremdē
1820. gada 20. novembrī Klusajā okeānā kašalots uzbruka vaļu zvejnieku kuģim „Eseksa” un to nogremdēja. Divdesmit kuģa jūrnieki ar niecīgiem pārtikas krājumiem trīs laivās vairākus mēnešus maldījās okeāna plašumos; izdzīvoja astoņi. Šis notikums iedvesmoja amerikāņu rakstnieku Hermani Melvilu radīt romānu „Mobijs Diks”. Vaļu mednieku kuģis „Eseksa” atstāja Nantaketas ostu Massačūsetsas štatā, Savienotajās Valstīs, 1819. gadā, dodoties divus ar pusi gadus ilgā kašalotu medību kuģojumā Klusā okeāna dienvidos. Reiss ar dažiem starpgadījumiem ritēja visumā veiksmīgi līdz 1820...

8. septembris. Kuļikovas kauja
1380. gada 8. septembrī Kuļikovas laukā netālu no Donas notika kauja starp Maskavas kņaza Dmitrija un tatāru kara kunga Mamaja spēkiem, kurā uzvarēja Dmitrijs. No tālaika viedokļa tā bija divu Zelta ordas varas sfērai piederošu feodāļu sadursme, taču vēlāk šajā kaujā tika saskatīts principiāls pavērsiens Krievijas atbrīvošanā no t.s. „mongoļu tatāru jūga”. 14. gadsimta otrajā pusē ar kādreiz vareno Zelta ordas hanu Čingizīdu – Čingizhana pēcnācēju – varu strauji gāja uz leju.
