一、首先，什麼是「歸寧」？
當新娘嫁進男方家展開婚後生活，也就意味著新娘脫離原生家庭，與親人相處的時間變少了；因此，相傳先秦時期便有的習俗中，有個「三朝回門」的儀式，也就是所謂的「歸寧」，歸寧意思是提醒新人「成家不忘娘」，婚後也要掛念娘家的父母。
而「三朝回門」（歸寧）意即新娘出嫁三天便回娘家，又稱「回門」、「作客」、「返外家」、「歸省」、「頭轉客」等；新女婿隨同拜見岳父母，則有向他們表達「感恩戴德」之意，也藉以提升兩家姻親情誼。
二、歸寧時間？何時適合？
根據各地方習俗有所不同，歸寧大多會選在新婚頭3天（也就是婚宴結束後的3天內）回娘家，稱為「頭轉客」；第6天及第12天歸寧的稱為「二轉客」，另外也有滿月才回娘家的「三轉客」。
通常會一早由新娘的母舅打電話或親自邀請新人，或由新娘的弟妹前往新郎家，請新人一起回娘家：多為上午邀請、中午聚餐（女方家準備，又稱「歸寧宴」或「請女婿」），然後日落前回家。（備註：新婚未滿4個月忌在外過夜，因此歸寧宴結束後，新人便會一同返回男方家）
另外，歸寧儀式結束後，媒人的工作才算告一段落，此時男方別忘了送禮給媒人表示謝意喔！
三、歸寧要準備哪些東西？
【男方需攜帶的禮品】
1.蘋果（代表平安）2.橘子（甜蜜）3.椪餅、椪柑（象徵新娘懷孕、肚皮「澎」起來之意）4.酒（長長久久）5.其他禮品（只要加起來是偶數即可，現代多以簡單的水果代替）
【女方需準備的回禮】
1.桃餅、六件蜜餞（代表新人甜蜜蜜）2.連根帶尾之甘蔗二根（甜頭甜尾，兩方甜蜜）3.種子雞一或二對（約二、三個月大的公母雞各一隻，新娘生產時進補用）4.米香、糯米糕（祝福夫妻如膠似漆）5.橘子、香蕉
備註：有些地方習俗是結婚當天，女方回禮會一併於男方迎娶時載回。
四、歸寧流程和注意事項
1、回門前探房
在現代婚嫁禮俗中，已經把母舅探房及歸寧同時舉行。前面小編有提到，通常婚後第三天，娘家會請新娘的弟妹到新郎家，邀請新人一起回娘家，並於上午受邀、中午用餐、日落前回家這樣；不過順應時勢，現在多是結婚當天迎娶時一併口頭邀約，或是一同到新房等儀式結束後，直接探房來通知，更簡便的方式是直接電話約訪，同時新人會回給紅包。
2、出發女方家前
新郎清點要贈送給岳父岳母的禮品，準備妥善後出發女方家。古禮歸寧省親常會送上象徵吉祥寓意的贈禮，像是蘋果、椪柑等，近幾年已將習俗簡化，以水果或酒類等伴手禮替代，畢竟最主要的是表達感謝之意。3、進門
當抵達女方家門時口時，應先由女方進門，男方跟隨在後；進家門後要先祭拜祖先，其次才是拜見岳父岳母，以及女方家親朋好友。
4、用餐
在宴會中，新郎要坐大位，當菜上桌都必須由新女婿先動筷子，其他人才能夠動筷。而用餐完畢離席時，新郎要放俗稱的「壓桌禮」紅包在桌上，金額以當天用餐的桌錢為主。
5、返家
當女婿要拜別返家時，女方家會以糕餅、雛雞二對（繁衍後代之寓意）、剪刀針線、鞋等物品，由新娘一併帶回夫家；而新人需在天黑前趕回家（因新婚未滿四個月忌在外過夜），也可以夫婦一起去旅館投宿，期望早日生子。
備註：有些地方習俗認為，若有不得已的原因需要留宿時，夫妻需分房睡，因夫婦於歸寧時同房，對女方家親屬不吉利。
6、進入男方家
當返回男方家時，則改由男方先進入，女方跟隨在後。
五、補充＿歸寧小知識
1、歸寧在台灣地區有南北部之分，亦有一說是客家人與閩南人之分。其中客家人有一習俗，是新娘歸寧需備紅包數個送給父母、祖父母、伯叔、兄弟姊妹等親人，而收受紅包的親人也要添一點錢回贈新娘。
2、北部習俗是女方於訂婚日宴客，且男方在陪新娘歸寧時，要準備兩種不同的餅，好讓岳父母分送親友，告知新人已回娘家作客，分別是「酥皮餅」與「青仔皮」；南部女方家則習慣在歸寧日宴客，且南部沒有送餅的習慣，只需帶伴手禮，但要在宴席中介紹女方直系及旁系長輩，讓新郎一一稱呼後，「成婿之禮」才算完成。
3、若已經訂婚宴請親友，回門便不會大肆鋪張，而是採取家庭聚餐的方式，簡單用個餐即可。
4、關於「帶路雞」：是新娘歸寧時，女方的回禮，現代婚俗中也有人於結婚當日，便將帶路雞讓新娘帶至男方家。按照傳統習俗，一定要有一隻公雞及一隻母雞，以九尺長的紅色帶子綁住雞腳，並將公雞及母雞置於花籃內，讓女兒帶回男方家，引領夫妻倆「好起家」（台語）的吉兆。
