Digital divide and the implications of the Vodacom/Maziv merger
Earlier this month (8 July 2025), the Competition Commission announced that it had reached an agreement with Vodacom and Maziv on revised conditions that allow the parties to proceed with a merger that had been prohibited by the Competition Tribunal. Vodacom acquiring a stake in Maziv, a South African fibre infrastructure company, with the goal of creating a leading fibre provider. Initially, Vodacom planned to acquire a 30% stake, with an option to increase it to 40%. Our next guest is concerned that these updated revisions may lead to monopoly in the telecommunications sector & make finding an affordable internet connectivity difficult...

Finally! Reasons the Vodacom fibre deal was blocked
It’s many months late, but the Competition Tribunal has finally released its reasons document – or at least, a non-confidential version – outlining why it decided to block Vodacom’s acquisition of a co-controlling stake in fibre operator Maziv. The tribunal last October shocked the merging parties – and the telecommunications industry – when it announced it had agreed with the Competition Commission’s recommendation that the proposed multibillion-rand acquisition of Maziv, which owns Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa, be blocked on competition grounds. Vodacom, which has appealed the decision at the competition appeal court, had made an offer to buy 30% of Maziv – and...

South Africa’s Competition Commission says Vodacom-Maziv deal is anti-competitive
Five months after blocking the Vodacom-Maziv merger deal, South Africa’s Competition Commission is standing firm on its decision to prevent the country’s second-largest telecom operator’s attempt to acquire a co-controlling stake in Maziv, the parent company of Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa. The anti-competition watchdog argued that allowing Vodacom to take control would cement its dominance in mobile and give it undue influence over the fibre market, an industry over which it previously had limited control. Another complication for the telecom operator is that it does not have any precedent to make an argument. Telecom operators with fibre...

Vodacom Agrees To Pay R1 Million Fine
Vodacom agreed to pay a R1 million fine levied by South Africa’s National Consumer Tribunal. Vodacom violated the Consumer Protection Act by imposing substantial penalties on customers who wished to cancel their fixed-term contracts. These penalties amounted to 75% of the remaining contract balance, effectively preventing customers from exercising their right to terminate their contracts early. The Consumer Protection Act in South Africa allows subscribers to cancel such contracts before their designated end dates, provided they give a 20-day notice to the network operator and are subject to a reasonable cancellation fee.

Micropower Makate vs megaplayer Vodacom whose Please Call Me misery continues
In his brilliant book, The End of Power, author Moises Naim wrote that the likes of innovative startups, loosely organised activists, upstart citizen media and charismatic individuals who come from nowhere are shaking up the old order. “These are the micropowers,” he wrote, “small, unknown or once negligible actors that have found ways to undermine, fence-in or thwart the megaplayers……” Naim’s treatise is hugely respected. In 2015, The End Of Power was Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s inaugural pick in his “Year of Books challenge” where he challenged his community to join him in reading one book every two weeks for...

Vodacom Admits That M-Pesa Roll-out In South Africa Flopped (feat. Dominique Collett)
Vodacom is finally pulling the plug on their disastrous six-year attempt to roll out M-Pesa in South Africa. (The service will be shut down on June 30th 2016.) Funny thing is, Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub has blamed his company’s diabolical failure to meet their target of enlisting at least 10 million active users on South Africa’s relatively well-established banking industry. (By the end of 2015 they had only managed to onboard a paltry 76,000 active users.) However, Joosub’s assertion does not sit well with our guest on this week’s episode of the African Tech Round-up— the brilliant and insightful, Dominique Collett. ...
