Alcohol Tax Increase Dies Again in Roundhouse
For years, journalist Ted Alcorn has written about alcohol-related deaths in New Mexico and the many efforts made in Santa Fe to reduce that number by increasing the state's alcohol tax rate. House Bill 417, introduced during this year's session, would have increased the alcohol tax rate and raised tens of millions of dollars for a prevention and treatment program. Although there was early momentum for the proposal, the bill died in committee before receiving a full vote. Senior Producer Lou DiVizio spoke with Alcorn about the failed measure and asked why the bill seemed to abruptly run out of...

Pong
Pong is a table tennis–themed twitch arcade sports video game, featuring simple two-dimensional graphics, manufactured by Atari and originally released on 29 November 1972. It is one of the earliest arcade video games; it was created by Allan Alcorn as a training exercise assigned to him by Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell, but Bushnell and Atari co-founder Ted Dabney were surprised by the quality of Alcorn's work and decided to manufacture the game. Bushnell based the game's concept on an electronic ping-pong game included in the Magnavox Odyssey, the first home video game console. In response, Magnavox later sued Atari for patent infringemen

After graduation he joined an electronics company, and there met Ted Dabney, with whom he founded a start-up company with the aim of creating a commercial version of Spacewar! for the arcades. In 1972 the pair changed the company name to...

What did journalist Ted Alcorn learn during his seven-part investigation into drinking trends in New Mexico? From uncovering why the state leads the U.S. in alcohol-related deaths, to discovering laws and policies that ignore and even encourage alcohol use, Alcorn spotted gaps in the system that allowed one man to spend 40 years in active addiction without intervention. But there's hope: he also found some solutions. Now he joins host William C. Moyers to share what he discovered.
