Pack Goats in Backcountry Fly Fishing, with Mike Raether
Mike Raether is a backpacker, fly fisher, hunter, and camper. He is the author of over 50 articles in national and regional magazines such as Bugle, Northwest Fly Fishing, and Montana Outdoors. Last spring, he published a fishing guide titled Flyfisher’s Guide to Northwest Montana’s Mountain Lakes. In this episode, we discuss the use of pack goats as a backcountry fly fishing aid. Mike covers how he uses his goat, the care required, and considerations for bringing a goat deep in the backcountry. I didn’t even know I was interested in using pack goats until I talked to Mik...

Today, my family and I decided to drive a few hours to the Cheesman Canyon to hike in and fish the South Platte River. My step-son Kollin (13) is really getting into flyfishing and it is time he got a chance at some big fish. While catching a few fish this day, I discuss a variety of topics including kids fishing, the four plights of the South Platte River, my perfect casting(!), my on-air hat idea, and why GFF has over-glorified the fishing gods. After relaxing streamside with a cup of hot cocoa, we decided to walk out of the canyon...

The Patience Game
This foggy November day I'm out scouting for rainbows, and even though the podcast starts out with no real subject, it turns into a podcast about patience. And I play the patience game with the fish that aren't there. I finally manage to find a school of small fish. My good friend Nils, who joined me that day, proves that the fish were there. While I was just around a bend fishing, he caught a huge rainbow - probably weighing in at 10-12 lbs or 5-6 kilos and measuring a whopping 65 centimeters or some 25 inches. I only saw the picture...

Anticipation
Another podcast! My new recorder has been doing overtime, and I have been fortunate enough to get out enough and have time to record. I'm still struggling with the wind here - both when casting and when recording. So on this podcast you will have quite a bit of noise from the wind - and from my clothes because I'm trying to shelter the microphone - and from my stomach because I'm hungry! How many podcasts have you heard with stomach growling recorded? And oh yes: there's also a fish being caught on this podcast. That doesn't happen too often.

Skunked
Last year this time I still hadn't caught my first fish on my beloved Danish coast. 19 trips without anything took its toll. This year is a bit better, but when this was recorded in February there was very little action, which - combined with the painful memories from last year - was the reason for the theme.

Winter fishing
Fishing on the coast in the winter is very close to some obscure kind of self torture. There are only vague chances of catching anything, it's usually pretty uncomfortable and you would mostly be better off staying home tying flies. But I defied the elements and last year's experience with 19 (nineteen!) skunked trips in a row in January and February and went fishing in February anyway.

Getting wet - or not
And trust me: you will fall if you haven't already. A bit of care and preparation in that regard will enable you to continue fishing in spite of having been partly submerged. I wasn't prepared this day, and because of this I wound up recording this podcast in my car. Beating the crowds
How come the best and most productive fishing spots are always close to parking lots? Mostly because anglers are lazy. Most of us will fish close to parking lots because we don't want to walk. And when many people gather close to the places with easy access, these places automatically become productive - simply because more anglers catch more fish. But it also means crowding and fish that have been fished over again and again. The best way to beat the crowds is simply to walk. It will lead you away from people and may even show you new and...

Night fishing
Night fishing for sea trout is one of my favorite types of fishing. In this podcast I take you on a night fishing trip and let you get some of the impressions that I had during the darkest hours of a night on the Swedish coast. No fish are caught while recording, but the trip was an overall success with 22 fish registered in the journal -- of these 15 sea trout. That was between three anglers, but even though we were night fishing, quite a few of the fish were caught during the day. This an important fact to observe: fish...

Knots and copyright
During a trip for sea trout (one caught while NOT recording), I mused a bit about knots and copyright. These two things stick together like peas in a pod here on GFF, because our knot section with text and drawings is the most illegally copied part of the site. For some reason people seem to think that they can lift article right off our pages and onto their own. I hate it when that happens! A trip to the Danish coast in May means garfish. This particular day was quite windy but sunny and nice most of the time. It started off as an orgy with so many fish that we lost count. Once it settled a bit I started recording to talk about these entertaining and easily caught fish, which run in the millions every spring. For the first time in the history of the GFF podcasts, I manage to hook and land a fish. And a good one too! The last 10 minutes of this recording documents the hooking, fight, landing and release of a 75 cm (30 inches) Swedish sea trout. Tabou Caddis Emerger
Oftentimes, when I show the Tabou Caddis Emerger to fellow fly fishers, they comment on how simple it is and buggy looking, "Why didn't I think of that?!...that thing's gotta work!...how buggy...", they comment. Well, they hit the nail on the head with the simplistic bugginess concept, but I claim the pattern really isn't new, I think it's just a new way to tie an emerging caddis with some under-used and relatively unknown materials in my flytying material collection. Since the winter has covered most of the coastal water with ice here in the Baltic and fishing is near impossible, I have taken a walk in an area near Copenhagen, where a stream usually attracts large sea trout during the winter. It's no spawning stream and there's no fishing in the stream, but as you will hear, the place is interesting, and fish will gather here to find fresh water to help them tolerate the cold saltwater in the ocean.
