Functional - Predicting Microvascular Decompression Success in Trigeminal Neuralgia with Brain Imaging
This episode explores the predictive value of preoperative brain microstructural alterations for the success of microvascular decompression (MVD) in classical trigeminal neuralgia (CTN). Based on an abstract from 'Cephalalgia : an international journal of headache' (2026), this study analyzed white and gray matter changes using Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI) in CTN patients and healthy controls. Key findings revealed widespread microstructural disruptions in CTN patients, with preoperative free-water accumulation in a specific gray matter cluster emerging as a highly specific predictor of MVD failure. These insights have significant clinical implications for personalizing treatment strategies and managing patient expectations. This information...

Contactless Microvascular Decompression for Trigeminal Nerve Pain

This technique repositions the offending blood vessel with the patient’s own pericranial tissue, avoiding synthetic materials like Teflon. By eliminating foreign implants, it reduces risks of inflammation, granuloma formation, persistent nerve compression, and implant movement. These doctors report that transposition techniques using either pericranium or Teflon slings may provide more durable pain relief than interposition methods. How Oral Contraceptive Pill Phase Alters Microvascular Response to Local Heating
In this episode of The APS Publications Podcast, we hear from coauthor Casey G. Turner about the study, "Oral contraceptive pill phase alters mechanisms contributing to cutaneous microvascular function in response to local heating." Published in AJP–Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, this study investigates the effect of OCP phase on in vivo microvascular endothelium-dependent vasodilation and explores underlying mechanisms. Present findings suggest OCP phase does not affect overall microvascular endothelium-dependent dilation but does affect the underlying mechanisms. In women using OCP, there is a robust reliance on EDHF pathways and the COX pathway moderates basal microvascular blood flow and dem...

Transmission of Anaplasma phagocytophilum from endothelial cells to peripheral granulocytes in vitro under shear flow conditions
Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap) is a gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium that is able to infect different animal species and humans worldwide. Based on DNA sequencing, Ap has newly been reallocated from the genus Ehrlichia to the genus Anaplasma in the family Anaplasmataceae (DUMLER et al. 2001). In humans and animals, the clinical signs of Ap infection vary from mild symptoms to severe clinical outcomes, including death. However, the disease generally presents as undifferentiated fever accompanied by leucopenia, thrombocytopenia and increased serum transaminase activities (DUMLER et al. 2005; DUMLER et al. 2007; RIKIHISA 2011). Hard-bodied ticks of the genus Ixodes (family Ixodidae) are the main vectors...

Microvascular dysfunction in the course of metabolic syndrome induced by high-fat diet
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). One important feature underlying the pathophysiology of many types of CVD is microvascular dysfunction. Although components of MetS are themselves CVD risk factors, the risk is increased when the syndrome is considered as one entity. We aimed to characterize microvascular function and some of its influencing factors in the course of MetS development. Methods: Development of MetS in C57BL/6 mice on a high-fat diet (HFD, 51% of energy from fat) was studied. The initial phase of MetS (I-MetS) was defined as the first 2 weeks of HFD feeding...

Background: Early reconstitution after injury to the endothelium is an important feature for reducing a number of vessel wall pathologies. We investigated the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF) and its impact on the vascular remodeling process and reendothelialization after microsurgery. Methods and Results: Microvascular anastomosis was performed in the rat femoral artery. One group was treated with intraluminal administration of VEGF and the other with vehicle. We investigated morphological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical changes of the vascular wall and the reendothelialization process. After 10 days, reendothelialization was significantly faster in VEGF-treated rats. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a complete healing in...

Cultured microvascular endothelial cells derived from the bovine corpus luteum possess NCAM-140
Previously, five phenotypically different, stable types of microvascular endothelial cells (MVE) were isolated from the bovine corpus and cultured successfully. We found that three out of these five types of MVE express the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM). As shown by immunocytochemistry, weak NCAM immunoreactivity occurred mainly in the perinuclear area of cell type 1. Monolayers of types 2 and 5 revealed heavy NCAM immunoreactivity, which was localized predominantly at the lateral cell surface outlining the contact zones of adjacent cells. In contrast, cell types 3 and 4 were not NCAM immunoreactive. Western blot analyses substantiated these results: While cell type 1 showed a weak immunoreactive...
