Contactless Microvascular Decompression for Trigeminal Nerve Pain
Neurosurgeons at UCSF, led by Drs. Edward Chang and Anthony Lee, present a “contactless” microvascular decompression (MVD) approach for trigeminal neuralgia using a pericranium sling. This technique repositions the offending blood vessel with the patient’s own pericranial tissue, avoiding synthetic materials like Teflon. By eliminating foreign implants, it reduces risks of inflammation, granuloma formation, persistent nerve compression, and implant movement. These doctors report that transposition techniques using either pericranium or Teflon slings may provide more durable pain relief than interposition methods. However, all MVD approaches studied significantly reduced pain for patients with this debilitating condition, offering safer and potentially longer...

Many women who have typical symptoms of coronary artery disease actually have coronary microvascular disease (MVD). Gretchen Wells, M.D., a cardiologist, explains why it is important for physicians to proceed with tests for MVD when cardiac catheterization does not indicate coronary artery disease. She explores the common symptoms, proven and potential interventions, and the serious risks posed by MVD. Reducing Double-strand DNA Break Repair Exacerbates Vascular Aging
BUFFALO, NY- October 18, 2023 – A new research paper was published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 19, entitled, “Reduction of double-strand DNA break repair exacerbates vascular aging.” Advanced age is the greatest risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death. Arterial function is impaired in advanced age which contributes to the development of CVD. One underexplored hypothesis is that DNA damage within arteries leads to this dysfunction, yet evidence demonstrating the incidence and physiological consequences of DNA damage in arteries, and in particular, in the microvasculature, in advanc...

Early Effects of Ticagrelor Versus Clopidogrel on Peripheral Endothelial Function After Non-ST-Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome and Assessment of Its Relationship With Coronary Microvascular Function Am J Cardiol. 2023 Aug 15; 201:16-24 Abstract Peripheral endothelial dysfunction is an independent predictor of adverse long-term prognosis after acute coronary syndrome. Furthermore, the relation between peripheral endothelial function and invasive indexes of coronary microvascular function in NSTEACS is unclear. Transmission of Anaplasma phagocytophilum from endothelial cells to peripheral granulocytes in vitro under shear flow conditions
Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ap) is a gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium that is able to infect different animal species and humans worldwide. Based on DNA sequencing, Ap has newly been reallocated from the genus Ehrlichia to the genus Anaplasma in the family Anaplasmataceae (DUMLER et al. 2001). In humans and animals, the clinical signs of Ap infection vary from mild symptoms to severe clinical outcomes, including death. However, the disease generally presents as undifferentiated fever accompanied by leucopenia, thrombocytopenia and increased serum transaminase activities (DUMLER et al. 2005; DUMLER et al. 2007; RIKIHISA 2011). Hard-bodied ticks of the genus Ixodes (family Ixodidae) are the main vectors...

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). One important feature underlying the pathophysiology of many types of CVD is microvascular dysfunction. Although components of MetS are themselves CVD risk factors, the risk is increased when the syndrome is considered as one entity. We aimed to characterize microvascular function and some of its influencing factors in the course of MetS development. Methods: Development of MetS in C57BL/6 mice on a high-fat diet (HFD, 51% of energy from fat) was studied. The initial phase of MetS (I-MetS) was defined as the first 2 weeks of HFD feeding...
