Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali - What type of role models do we need in academia?
Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher. Kamar's blog explores the critical issue of the lack of diversity in academia, particularly within STEM fields, and the role of role models in addressing these disparities. Highlighting the specific challenges faced by women and racial/ethnic minorities, she discusses the importance of role models who reflect diverse demographic characteristics to inspire and guide underrepresented groups. Kamar argues that having role models in senior academic positions can help challenge the status quo and break the cycle of underrepresentation, thus fostering a more inclusive and diverse...

Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher. One of the most significant and prevailing challenges in academia over the last 10 years or so, has centred around how best to support early career researchers (ECRs) in an evolving landscape which has increasingly shifted towards a reliance on temporary insecure contracts, increasing workloads, and real terms drop in salaries. The criteria for defining who falls under the category of ‘ECR’ varies across institutions and organisations, and this is important if we need to identify where support is needed, and who to provide it to. Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali - What is “brain health” and is it important?
Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher. With populations getting older, age-associated disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, are projected to place significant demands on global health systems over the coming years. There is therefore an increasing need to understand how to improve and preserve our brain health, but how can we do this when no consensus definition exists of what brain health actually is and what it looks like? In this blog Kamar discusses the challenge of trying to understand brain health, and why it is important. Find the original text, an...

This month, we’re bringing you 3 refinement papers. Let’s start with rodent housing.Research rodents are conventionally housed in shoebox sized cages that limit their ability to perform natural behaviors such as nesting and burrowing. These restrictions are known to impair welfare, but could they even increase disease risk and shorten lifespans? A new meta-ana...

Refining anaesthesia and euthanasia for zebrafish and mice
Sedation is necessary for zebrafish during procedures such as imaging, biopsy, and surgery to ensure animal welfare and high-quality science. But the effects of sedation can last beyond the administration period and should also be carefully considered. A paper by Gressler et al. explores the use of eugenol and propofol during a 3-hour sedation and their subsequent effects after a 1 hour washout period. Both drugs had effects on behavior and physiology even after the washout period. For behavior, in a novel tank test, eugenol was found to amplify diving response while propofol induced anti-anxiety responses. For physiology, both drugs...

In people, we call it pain. Most pain research is done with rodents, but nociception is pretty well conserved beyond mammals. That includes invertebrates, such as the fruit fly. Some work has been done in larval drosophila, but larvae exist in a transient state; any quote unquote pain is therefore transient too. To study longer lasting changes in...
