Queer Lit
“Queer Exiles” with Ben Robbins
From Christopher Isherwood to Djuna Barnes, some of the most prolific queer writers of the 20th century wrote in exile. Ben Robbins joins me to explain how and why queer writers connected with each other in exile and how (in)voluntary movement shaped their stories. Ben shares some surprising encounters from the archives and paints a picture of some of the locations of queer exile: Berlin, Tangier and Capri. Robert M. Dowling — Coyote: The Dramatic Lives of Sam Shepard - with Jackson R. Bryer
“Shepard, the Bob Dylan of American Drama, had an almost unbelievably eventful life, and Robert M. Dowling’s essential biography illuminates every corner of it, while providing a wonderfully clear guide to Shepard’s tangled, massively influential body of work.”— David Auburn, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrightSam Shepard was a true American original. A theater and film icon who lived life on a mythic scale, Shepard became an embodiment of the fierce independence and wild freedom of the American West. Songs for the Struggling Artist
This Show Needed Gertrude Stein
I saw an adaptation of a Thornton Wilder play at The Public and it made me real mad. My only comfort is that apparently Thornton Wilder used to get real mad at everything he saw as well, so I guess I’m in good company. The show was an adaptation of The Skin of Our Teeth, which, for the most part, just involved throwing some songs into it. It was mostly harmless, I suppose. I’d never seen The Skin of Our Teeth and this production made me go straight home to read it so I guess it d...

S1E3: Our Town by Thornton Wilder
If you could seal up a single day from your old hometown into a time capsule for a hundred years, what would it look like? For some folks, small-town life is not it. The kids I teach, plenty of them want out as soon as possible. But it’s also been my experience that plenty of them stay, and plenty of them that leave come back like swallows to Capistrano. Small Town, USA, isn’t perfect, but it isn’t always the dead zone people would make it out to be. It’s where our roots have crawled...

The world is ending... the world is ending... but if the world is ending, that means it hasn't ended yet. After seeing The Seat of Our Pants at The Public Theater (running thru at least the end of the month!), it's never been clearer that Thornton Wilder is America's great under-appreciated literary trickster. His keen playful writing combines magical realism, genre-busting humor, literary zip—and there are few people better suited to adapting Wilder than Ethan Lipton. He joins us this week alongside Jeremy McCarter, Wilder's literary executor, for a look into the man's genius, this play's stil...

I Mae Be Wrong, But...
The Afterparty of Love (Grief) x Thornton Wilder
In this November installment of I Mae Be Wrong, But…, Caroline Mae Woodson engages with the notion that grief is “love with nowhere to go,” using Thornton Wilder’s line “the highest tribute to the dead is not grief, but gratitude.” We talk about a grandmother’s engagement ring, a kitchen recipe card, and to broader themes of remembrance and living well, rather than simply mourning.Interweaving pop-culture examinations of the show “Long Story Short”, the series “WandaVision”, and the song “The Luckiest” —she explores how grief and gratitude can sift into our everyday lives, not by vanishing, but by transfo...

Eng reflects on growing up as the son of Chinese immigrants in 1970s Flushing, Queens—balancing life inside his parents’ hand laundry with the turbulent, inspiring world outside. His memoir traces the journey from punk rock and downtown theater to discovering the Chinese influence on Thornton Wilder’s Our Town––a result of Wilder spending part of his childhood in China. Howard Sherman, "Another Day's Begun: Thornton Wilder’s Our Town in the 21st Century" (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2021)
Howard Sherman's Another Day's Begun: Thornton Wilder's Our Town in the 21st Century (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2021) provides a fascinating tour of contemporary productions of Wilder's great play. Why does this play from 1938 continue to speak to contemporary audiences, and how does it speak differently in different settings? How is it both timeless and continually timely? And how have contemporary stagings dealt with its reputation as a wholesome, dull chestnut? Whether performed in a maximum security prison, at a hospital, or at prestigious theatres like Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre, Our Town communicates a universal message about paying careful attention to the...

'We all know that something is eternal' - Arts Administrator, Advocate and Author, Howard Sherman
A work of startling originality when it debuted in 1938, Thornton Wilder's Our Town evolved to be seen by some as a vintage slice of early 20th Century Americana, rather than being fully appreciated for its complex and eternal themes and its deceptively simple form. Another day's Begun: Thornton Wilder's Our Town in the Twentieth Century is a new book that shines a light on the play's continued impact in the 21st century and makes a case for the healing powers of Wilder's text to a world confronting multiple crises. In this episode I am joined by the author, Howard Sherman. ...

Music Speaks
Hello Dolly!
I sat down with my co-host, Hunter Sigona to do a deep dive into the acclaimed musical, Hello Dolly! Hello, Dolly! is a 1964 musical with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955. The musical follows the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a strong-willed matchmaker, as she travels to Yonkers, New York, to find a match for the miserly "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire" Horace Vandergelder. https://open.spotify.com/album/2cDK1Eg3LONqzmRas1PpkM ...
