“Hurricane’s Approachin’!”
May 25, 2025: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Yes, we are still in Eastertide. And, it is also Memorial Day Weekend in our country. A time when we remember those who gave the last full measure for the freedoms we hold dear. And in today’s scriptures, we hear two passages that have a lot to say to us in this time and place, especially as we remember those who died for the ideals of this nation. The first is the gospel, where Jesus encounters a man who is lame and has been trying to get into the p...

Right before the Cold Wars ends in December of 1991, Bret Easton Ellis releases American Psycho in March and James Cameron releases Terminator 2 in July. One is about an inhuman killing machine, and the other is about a cyborg who leans the value of human life. One a vision of the consumer end of late 20th century technology, the other military, depicted respectively as pathetic void and maximally cool, these two works give us insight into a key historical moment. Emmet Penney, co-host of ex.haust, joins host Timothy Wilcox to determine which vision has the better business card.

Cultural Engine Failure ft. Grant Dever
September 11, 2001, Life of Pi comes out, then a few weeks later, Donnie Darko releases in theaters, a box office failure due its timing and central plane crash imagery. In these two narratives, a young man struggles to survive within a harsh world, while grappling with an animalistic nature. Grant Dever joins host Timothy Wilcox to recover this cultural moment which is about to be subsumed within a new paradigm.

A Sketch of Christmas
A short Christmas special: December 1983, A Christmas Story comes out in theaters, depicting a kid who wants a BB gun for Christmas, but who keeps being told he'll shoot his eye out. A few months earlier, Raymond Carver publishes his story "Cathedral," in which a close-minded man is visited by a blind man. Both works have a realist bent, showing characters who do not experience radical growth over the course of the story, but who do start to see a little bit more.

Extracting the American Outlaw ft. Sonya Mann
In August, 1967, Bonnie and Clyde comes out and glamorizes two real-life outlaws on the big screen. It is in this moment that foundational gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson publishes his first book, a close-up account of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang. In both works, we see the self-conscious creation of an American outlaw image, yet each work offers a distinct vision of its subject just as counter-cultural shifts are taking this energy in new directions. Indie publisher Sonya Mann (SonyaSupposedly) joins host Timothy Wilcox to explore this thrilling double vision.

Triplethink ft. James Simpkin
Summer 1949, in post-World War II Europe, at the dawn of the Cold War, George Orwell publishes Nineteen Eighty-Four. The novel's insights have led its ideas to become shorthand for increasingly broad generalities. At the same time, in the same context, The Third Man offers its own distinct vision. James Simpkin, a PhD candidate in History, joins host Timothy Wilcox to explore this double vision of this pivotal moment.

British Romanticism and Negative Capability with Timothy Wilcox
Lovely to have Timothy on the show. Quite fittingly, there was a really nice narrative thread running through our chat linking British Romanticism, cognitive dissonance and negative capability, favourite books, the impact of the internet on narrative in works of fiction, and Timothy's upcoming literature study course built around the theme of the sea. I had never heard of the concept of negative capability before and so I was fascinated to learn about it. Likewise, I also enjoyed learning about British Romanticism, even though I'm English I didn't know that much about the movement.

Journey of Being Alone
Scripture Reading {Transcript} Sermon Text Loneliness is a Silent Killer of Modern Society Loneliness is a silent killer of modern society. I read a very interesting article on the Globe and mail written by Elizabeth Renzetti and in this article Amy Rokak, a psychologist and lecturer at York University who has been researching on this topic of loneliness for more than three decades. And she said “loneliness has been linked to depression, anxiety, interpersonal hostility, increased vulnerability to health problems, and even to suicide.” So loneliness, is not just lone...

Episode 13: Timothy Wilcox
In this HemoStories episode, Joslyn interviews Ohio native, Timothy Wilcox in a stairwell while attending NHF’s 67th Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas. Together they discuss Timothy’s personal experiences of being both a diabetic and a moderate hemophiliac. Despite being raised with many close family members affected by hemophilia (brothers, cousins, uncles), treatment was especially difficult for Timothy because he comes from a family of Jehovah's Witnesses, who typically do not believe in blood transfusions of any kind. This episode also helps the listener gain insight on what it was like to have hemophilia before prophylaxis and what...

John CONSTABLE, The Vale of Dedham 1827-28
This was Constable’s last major painting of the Stour Valley, his definitive treatment of a favourite subject, which summed up his personal affection for the place and his lifelong devotion to the example of Claude Lorrain. A relaxing holiday in Suffolk in the autumn of 1827 with his two eldest children had refreshed his associations with the area and may have motivated him to begin painting this work. On 11 June 1828 he wrote to John Fisher that he had ‘Painted a large upright landscape (perhaps my best)’ (Beckett IV, p. 236). Constable depicted the Dedham Vale framed by trees, looking eastwards from Gun Hi...

John CONSTABLE, Cloud study 1822
Timothy Wilcox has suggested that ‘the central cloud is one of the most convincingly three-dimensional’ to be found in the sky studies ‘and that it is fully modelled in a range of colours and tones from its warm grey underside to the icy highlights crowning its upper edge’ (Liverpool and Edinburgh 2000, p. 84)
