Ep 19 - Pride Month Special Pt 2 - Oscar Wilde
Our second Author of Pride Month is none other than Oscar Wilde!Traveling around the world from Ireland and self-proclaiming that he kissed another famous poet named Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde was persecuted, jailed, and sentenced to two years of hard labor for being gay. Oscar Wilde used his artistry to continue the narrative that there is more to love than the singular, heterosexual man-and-woman relationship. Love knows no bounds and, many times brings us our biggest strengths. Famous for his book, “The Portrait of Dorian Gray” (1891), we will be reading from his list of poems that...

How To Handle New and Strange Teachings
In Acts chapter 2, we see that Peter was speaking to a Jewish audience that had come from far and wide to celebrate Pentecost, or the Feast of Weeks. Peter confronted their incorrect beliefs and offered new explanations for what people were seeing and experiencing. These incorrect beliefs being confronted were the incorrect beliefs of God's denominated people at the time. And these corrections were not coming from the established religious leaders. It's easy to read Acts 2 and imagine that we would have been the ones accepting these corrections and getting baptized into these new beliefs...

Is the Time for Living Prophets Over?
Today we focus on something the lesson mentions, and that is what is said in Amos 3:7, which reads, "Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing, unless he reveals his secret to his servants the prophets." Amos 3:7 (WEB) From this key text, we not only learn that the role of prophets is to reveal the secret things of God, but also that the Lord won't carry out his plans unless he lets his servants, the prophets, know about it first. The Preferred Solution to the Sin Problem
How exactly Jesus is the solution to the sin problem? Some think Jesus solves the sin problem by changing the way God looks at the sinner, while leaving the sinner still committing sin in their hearts and lives. But if sinners still sin, is that really a solution to the sin problem? No. When you think about it (and you can even see it with your own eyes today), living in a society where sin still abounds, harbored in our own hearts, but is considered understandable and "atoned for" while not eliminated in reality, doesn't...

"In the Counsel of Wrongdoers" - "Psalm 1" (NABT)
The term usually translated "the wicked" in English translations of Hebrew scripture is better translated "wrongdoers." This episodes explains why and it also explains the implications of this difference - particularly as it relates to Psalm 1. While addressing translation issues to some degree, this episode has a greater focus on the practical lessons of this first part of the poem: "Cheers for the man who ain't done gone in the counsel of wrongdoers..." Are We Judged By Our Works If We Are Saved by Grace?
How is the concept of judgment linked to the “everlasting gospel” in the first angel’s message? Why must the gospel be central to the idea of judgment? Some might say that the gospel is central to the idea of judgment because it is thought that acceptance of the gospel equals salvation from judgment, and if we don't have to be judged, there is nothing to fear about the judgment. The "Every Wind of Doctrine" Problem
Ephesians 4:14 says that we should no longer be children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by trickery of men. From this statement we know that obviously the early church struggled with internal struggles from the "trickery of men." How about the end-times remnant church? Does it face internal struggles from the "trickery of men?" It's doubtful any Seventh-day Adventist would say "no." But the problem is that everyone thinks those in the "other group" are the ones being tricked, being "carried about with every wind of doctrine." That being the case, how do...

God Gives Us the Armor He Uses Too!
The strength of the Lord is linked with the armor of God. The way we become strong in the Lord is by wearing 6 pieces of armor, and when each piece is put on and used correctly, we will be able to stand in the evil day. Having on the armor gives us the same strength God has. Not only does it personally equip us, but it identifies us as part of God's army and thus we have the protection offered by the rest of His army, including the angels. An important, yet often missed, aspect of this is that...

Ain't Done Gone - "Psalm 1" (NABT)
This explains why a very common Hebrew conjugation is best translated using a feature of certain non-standard varieties of English. Also, we learn how this impacts the meaning of Psalm 1. More specifically, the Hebrew Qatal form is best translated using the "preverbal done" found in English dialects such as African American English and Southern American English. Both Qatal and "preverbal done" convey the perfective aspect. If you don't know what all these terms mean - no worries, their explained in the episode. :) Blog Article: http://www.bdsda.com/2023/08/20/aint-done-gone-in-the-counsel-of-wrongdoers-psalm-1-nabt/ Perfective Done (Yale Grammatical Diversity P...

Uriah Smith's Story of the Ship, the Pilot, and the Rebellion
Does the Bible validate the functioning of the gift of prophecy in the church only during the time of the apostles? Or does the gift continue until the return of Christ? The early Adventists found their answer in Ephesians 4:13 and shared it through a story by Uriah Smith about the captain of a ship who was bound to follow the instructions provided for a voyage. Does this pioneer's perspective apply still today? Are we part of the rebellion Uriah Smith speaks of? Or are we consistent with the pioneer's understanding of the scriptures on these points? Are We Satisfied to Have All Our Prophets Dead Prophets?
This week's Sabbath School lesson notes that in Ephesians 3:1-6, Paul receives new light on the mystery of the gospel, that is – that it is to go to the Gentiles. Paul tells us that this mystery was made known to him, and also to the other apostles and prophets, and that this mystery was something that was not known to previous generations. In other words, this mystery revealed to Paul and the other apostles and prophets was radically new light for the people of their day, but, as the lesson said, not much of a surprise to us...

We note that the remnant people "keep the commandments of God and *have,* (present tense), the testimony of Jesus, which is the Spirit of Prophecy." You CAN Control Your Thoughts Every Moment
It is incredible to me that the Ten Commandments are so comprehensive, even being our schoolmaster of thought. Covetousness is based in selfishness, and selfishness is the foundation for every other sin. As Sunday's lesson points out, covetousness could even be considered the original sin – that of Lucifer. Covetous thoughts are immoral. And covetous thinkers will not enter the kingdom of heaven, as the lesson for Sabbath points out, according to 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. The basic meaning of success is the achievement of an aim or a goal, and the sorts of goals people usually have in mind when talking about success have to do with bringing about some different set of circumstances in the future. Who May Travel Into Yahweh's Tent?
Ancient religions had requirements for admission into sacred spaces - usually sacrifices and purification rites. The requirements had nothing to do with true beliefs or moral behavior. This was true of pagan religions and of many in ancient Israel as well. There was, however, a philosophical school in ancient Israel that was particularly concerned about truth and morality. We consider an ancient Israelite poem that gives conditions for entering Yahweh's tent. What are the conditions? Not animal sacrifices or other typical ritual demands, but instead, the conditions are exclusively moral, and the description of the moral conditions makes it...

Did Ellen Understand the Plan of Redemption Like Jesus and Paul Did?
Ellen says that the *purpose* of redemption is to restore in man the image of his Maker, to bring him back to the *perfection* in which he was created. This sure sounds like we are to fully expect, and are fully expected to be equal to the moral character of Jesus, as it is the very purpose of redemption. It's common for Christians to think we can't be morally perfect in this life - that we can't really have Jesus' character - and Christians also tend to believe that having a perfect character simply isn't necessary.

It's common for Christians to think we can't be morally perfect in this life - that we can't really have Jesus' character - and Christians also tend to believe that having a perfect character simply isn't necessary.

Sabbath School With Branch Davidians
Putting the Kibosh on the Idea of Reincarnation
The Sabbath School lesson this week looks at bible verses that conflict with the idea of reincarnation. This is great if your audience is made up of people professing to believe in the teachings of the bible, but what if you have an audience that doesn't share that belief, as would most likely be the case if you were witnessing to someone who actually did hold a belief in reincarnation, such as a Hindu? Peter, in 1 Peter 3:15, admonishes us to be able to give a reason to **everyone** who asks. And as Hindus have different writings they...

Materialism: The Implication of the Resurrection
According to 1 Corinthians 15:16-19, 32; 1 Thessalonians 14:13-18; John 6:39-40; Genesis 3:19, among others, our hope is in the resurrection. Without it we can have no hope for those who have fallen asleep. If humanity possessed an immaterial spirit that continued to exist after death, these words would make no sense, as a resurrection would not be necessary in order to be with the Lord, because they would already be with the Lord, albeit without their physical bodies. And yet, that is what most of the professed Christian world believes. The Hebrew perspective that Jesus and the apostles plainly promoted...

Do We Have an Unconscious Spirit That Sleeps When We Die?
In this Sabbath School lesson it is pointed out that Jesus uses the metaphor for sleep in talking about death. But in what way is death like sleeping? Well, the main thing is inactivity and unconsciousness. But at least for death prior to the second death, there is also the fact that sleep is usually followed by awakening, a fitting parallel to resurrection. Of course this is all metaphor – it is just an analogy from an experience we understand to explain something we have not experienced ourselves. Are Thoughts Immaterial?
The Sabbath School lesson wonders about the mysterious is the nature of consciousness. It asks, "How does the few pounds of material tissue (cells and chemicals) in our heads, the brain, hold and create immaterial things, such as thoughts and emotions?" So what about thoughts? Are they immaterial? We may be inclined to think so, because a thought is not a concrete object. The word "thought" is not describing an object, but is describing a process of the physical brain. It isn't like a thought is literally floating around in the air or anything.

The Denial of Time
Most physicists today believe that reality on the most fundamental level is timeless and that our experience of time and of change is ultimately an illusion. If this is true, the future already exists as a fixed reality and we have no possibility of changing to become any more moral than the laws of nature have destined us to be. But, as we'll see in this episode, time denial rests on a shaky foundation and we actually have every reason to believe that time and change are real. Blog Article: The Denial of Time - (bdsda.com)

Non-Trinitarians Who Say The Holy Spirit Is A Person
This is SDA Holy Spirit Debate Now vs Then part 3! The main point this time is that throughout Christian history, there are been non-trinitarian theologies that affirm the personhood of the Holy Spirit. This makes it clear that the question of whether or not the Holy Spirit is a person is distinct from the question of whether trinitarianism is true. Modern SDAs tend to not be familiar with this historical reality and thus assume that anyone who accepts the personhood of the Holy Spirit is probably a trinitarian while anti-trinitarians are assumed to deny the personhood of the Holy...

SDA Holy Spirit Debate Now vs Then 1
Unlike in the modern SDA debate about the personhood of the Holy Spirit, early SDAs regarded the question of whether the Holy Spirit is a person to be distinct from the question of whether trinitarianism is true. All early SDAs were anti-trinitarian, but their primary objections to the trinity had nothing to do with the Holy Spirit. Instead, they objected to the trinitarian idea of what it means to be a person. When using the early SDA notion of personhood, accepting that the Holy Spirit is a person does not imply an acceptance of trinitarianism. Blog Article...

What is the SDA Doctrine of the Personality of God?
Ellen White described the early SDA beliefs regarding the "personality of God" as one of their pillar doctrines. Even though we commonly use the word "personality" to refer to character traits, the early SDAs used it to refer to what we might call "personhood." Their focus was on these two questions: 1) Is God a person? 2) What does it mean to be a person? Their answer to the first was, "Yes!" Their answer the second was, "It means to be a material being consisting of a real body with real parts and passions."

Victor Houteff (founder of the Davidian movement) took a progressive stance on health reform. In other words, rather than looking for medical/health advice from Ellen White or the doctors of her day, he recognized that knowledge of health advances and we need to advance with it. He pointed out that Ellen White recommended reading the best authors on health. If God had revealed the specifics of healthy living, there would be no need to turn to these lesser authorities. What Happened on Oct. 22, 1844 is Not Immaterial
Most Christians have a spiritualistic worldview - they believe in proposed "spiritual" (aka non-physical) realities. The distinctive doctrines of the Millerites moved them on a trajectory towards materialism (the belief that all that exists is made of matter). After the Great Disappointment, the Millerite movement fractured and different groups formed - heading either back toward spiritualism, maintaining the Millerite position, or moving toward full-fledged materialism. Those who formed the SDA church became full-fledged materialists. This episode explains how the Great Disappointment (and the SDA explanation of it) was instrumental in making that happen. Are There Literal Translations? (continued exchange with Edward D. Andrews)
If there is only one way to translate "literally," that would imply there can only be one "literal" translation. So if we acknowledge that there are multiple "literal" translations, we must admit that translations can differ in their wording and still be "literal." The issue with Genesis 1:1 is that, even when comparing literal translations, there are substantial differences. Some imply that the verse speaks of the ultimate beginning while others imply that it speaks only of the beginning of the actions described. Which is correct? The only way to know is to seek to understand the Hebrew original.
