Josef Freinademetz (1852-1908)天主教會有很多聖人，福若瑟神父可以說是唯一曾經在香港傳教的聖人。聖福若瑟神父出生於意大利，家裡非常貧窮，有九個兄弟姊妹。福若瑟年幼時已立志做神父，到外地傳教。1875年，晉升神父，派到家鄉附近的堂區工作，認識了聖言會的會士。1879年，加入聖言會，一心想到遠方傳教。由1879年8月至1880年4月期間，以首批傳教士身份被派來中國傳教。他先抵達香港服務了兩年。之後，他們二人又抵達山東省開始新的福傳工作。整整三十年的時間，福若瑟為建立天主的教會而風塵僕僕地在山東日夜不休地工作。他對中國人民的大愛以及他刻苦耐勞、奉獻犧牲和榮主救靈的精神，贏得了當地人的歡迎和愛戴。在教會中贏得「魯南之母」的美譽。為福若瑟來說，「愛是唯一令眾人明白的語言。」他深愛中國人和他們的文化。他所採取的傳教態度，就是極之尊重中國人，與中國人團結，甚至表明「我願意在天堂仍是中國人。」他是公認的「魯南天主教會之父」。當地百姓至今仍親切地稱他為「福神父」，並盛讚他是活聖人，具有中國最偉大的先賢孔子的道德風範，「他像孔夫子，常慈善、端莊、謙遜、集一切美德於一身」。直到今天，青年一代還在繼續聆聽祖父、父親和前輩們，講述這位偉大傳教士的故事。在此期間，他六次任代理主教及聖言會省會長，為培育中國本地傳教員和司鐸不遺餘力。1908年1月28日，他因服侍傷寒病人受感染而死於山東濟寧，年僅56歲。福若瑟尚在生前，就已經被很多人稱為聖人。福若瑟神父可以說是唯一曾經在香港傳教的聖人，在往中國傳教途中，他的首站就是香港。到達香港後，他在西貢工作並首次嘗到中國的文化與學習中國的語言。他在信中說，客家話是很困難的，這裡的食物也並不充裕：「我們的飯餐，包括：清早一杯黑咖啡，間中也會有一片麵包；九點半有白飯和魚果腹；下午四時半再有白飯和魚，之後什麼也再沒有。我也頗喜歡這樣的安排……這樣淡薄的生活肯定是升天堂的捷徑。我在這裡雖一無所有，但我並不怕捱饑抵渴，而且還生活在外教人當中。天主召我到中國傳教，我實在感激不已……我漸漸變成中國人了。這語言十分難學，在天主的助佑下，我定會學到。」福神父一週中大部分時間都是獨個兒在那裡，無形中造就了他日夜苦學中文的機會。福神父偶爾來到西貢沿海四個小島之一的鹽田梓，島上住有不足70人，航程需時45分鐘。福神父除到那裡舉行彌撒外，有時也給人付洗。他間中也會在島上度宿。福若瑟曾給他的會友們這樣寫說：「聖神是愛。愛和熱情對一個傳教士來說是至關重要的，沒有其他更重要的東西。福傳工作是一個愛的工作：一個傳教士愈是充滿了愛，他就愈是一個傳教士……福傳必須是一個發自內心的活動。只有當天主的愛傾注在我們心中後，福傳才會發自內心。『願你的名受顯揚，願你的國來臨』這句禱文應當讓我們心中的熱火持續不滅……我應當時時刻刻號召你們去祈禱、刻苦、奉獻和犧牲，多多益善、堅持不懈，因為這樣是為了靈魂的好處，為了天國和天主。」正如他曾寫說：「我不認為做一個傳教士是我獻給天主的一件禮物，而是天主賜給我的最大的恩寵。」福神父從來沒有因他的生活和工作而接受過任何特殊的讚揚和勳章，他甚至還推辭了作主教這樣的殊榮。他唯一想做的就是把基督帶給中國人，把中國人帶到天國。他愛中國人如此之深以至於他這樣說：「即使是在天國裡，我也想做一個中國人。」1908年1月28日，他在中國離開人間。1975年他與聖言會會祖楊生神父同列真福。2003年10月5日，教宗若望保祿二世冊封福若瑟神父為聖人。在香港，聖言會和香港教區2003年10月12日在藍田聖言中學舉行感恩彌撒，以此來光榮這兩位新聖人。2021-10-0407 min
