Equanimity | Upekkha | Buddhist Dhamma Talk by Ajahn Dhammasiha
Equanimity, in Pali 'Upekkhā', means letting go of likes and dislikes. Neither aversion nor attraction. The mind is even, balanced, neither attached nor repulsed by whatever sense impressions impinge on us.However, Ajahn Dhammasiha points out that we have to develop Equanimity based on wisdom, insight and understanding. There's a danger that we may mistake states of indifference, carlessness, or even subtle aversion for Upekkhā. That would be the "Equanimity" of the water buffalo, indifference based on ignorance. True equanimity arises from understanding sense impressions, and resulting feelings and emotions, as impermanent and not-self.

(InsightLA) First, we consider further some of the qualities of mudita, how joy is central to the teachings of the Buddha, how the cultivation of joy is crucial for being able to address difficulties and painful situations, how joy can be understood as a deep expression of our fundamental nature, and how joy can be present even in the midst of difficulties. Then we explore the nature of equanimity, pointing to several of the qualities of equanimity, including balance, evenness, unshakability, undetstanding and wisdom, warmth, and responsiveness. Review of the technique Ten days are over. Let us review what you have done during these ten days. You started your work by taking refuge in the Triple Gem, that is, in Buddha, in Dhamma, in Sangha. By doing so you were not being converted from one organized religion to another. In Vipassana the conversion is only from misery to happiness, from ignorance to wisdom, from bondage to liberation. The entire teaching is universal. You took refuge not in a personality, dogma, or sect, but in the quality of enlightenment. Someone who discovers the way to enlightenment is a...
