2025年的搞笑諾貝爾工程設計獎，頒給了印度科學家Vikash Kumar 與Sarthak Mittal，得獎的研究是「從工程設計角度分析了臭鞋子如何影響鞋架的良好使用體驗」。
這其實是一個「人因工程」的問題。人因工程是一門研究 人與系統互動 的科學，目標是讓設計更符合人的特性，提升 安全、健康、舒適與效率。
核心精神是：產品設計應配合人，而非讓人去遷就產品。
許多人都有這樣的經驗：去到人家家裡、或是需要脫鞋的公共場所，鞋子一脫下來發現旁邊的人都皺起眉頭，露出「你是野原廣志逆？」的表情（野原廣志是蠟筆小新的爸爸，以腳超臭聞名）。
這時候就會陷入極度的尷尬…最好的解決辦法是：「啊，我突然想起有事…」趕快離開，大家（包括你）的表情就會突然放鬆了。
腳臭來自於一種叫做「Kytococcus sedentarius」的細菌，它會分解汗液與皮膚角質中的蛋白質、脂質，產生一些含硫化合物與有機酸，這些副產物就是「腳臭」的主要來源。
在印度，這個問題更加嚴重，因為氣候炎熱潮溼，身體稍微活動一下就很容易大量流汗。如果沒有注意通風與清潔，鞋子當然就會變得臭死人了。
本文研究者想做的是鞋架的設計，而且要能解決這個「臭鞋問題」。
不過他發現，過去在人因工程的領域中，幾乎沒有任何相關的研究。
大部分都在說「多用途」、「不管幾歲的家人都易於使用」、「在站立時能清楚看到所有鞋子」、「提供繫鞋帶的座位空間」、「容易清潔、美觀、能防塵防潮」，以及「使用安全」。
當然不是說這些不重要，但是怎麼能忽略「鞋子太臭」了？
一雙臭鞋就已經夠糟了，要是鞋櫃一打開有幾十雙惡臭的鞋，說不定就要叫救護車、不、化學兵部隊了啦！
為了探討並解決這個被忽視的大問題，研究者先進行了一項先導性的問卷調查。調查對象是來自於作者服務的印度Shiv Nadar University的 149 名一年級學生。男性佔 80%，女性佔 20%，平均年齡為 18 歲。以下為本研究的重要結果與推論：
(a) 54.6% 的受訪者會因自己鞋子的臭味而在他人面前感到不自在。
(b) 約 52.4% 的人曾經遇到尷尬情況，需要因他人鞋子發臭而離開現場。
(c) 鞋子太臭時會如何處理：44.3% 洗鞋子，38.3% 拿去曬太陽；其餘還有將茶包放進鞋內、撒小蘇打粉、撒抗菌粉、噴除臭劑，還有少數人會很霸氣的直接買新的。
(d) 當研究者向受訪者展示市面上可用來防臭的產品圖片時（後述），88% 的人表示不知道這些產品。
(e) 多數受訪者對現行的解決方案並不滿意，希望購買能真正解決問題的新產品
(f) 90% 的人使用後，會把鞋子放在鞋櫃裡。
(g) 受訪者平均擁有 4 雙鞋，但常穿的只有 2 到 3 雙。
這個結果，多數人確實面臨鞋子發臭的問題，卻缺乏有效的解決方式。同時，大家普遍缺乏對市面上相關產品的認知，現有的解方有這幾種：
(a) 茶樹精油與椰子油對抗黴菌感染有效，並被建議用於處理腳臭。
(b) 百里香精油因含有高濃度的麝香草酚（thymol）或香芹酚（carvacrol），已被證實為合適的真菌抑制劑，能夠預防鞋子異味。
(c) 使用臭氧對鞋子進行消毒，已被發現能抑制細菌的繁殖，甚至已有相關裝置獲得專利。
(d) 在鞋子內部使用濃度 70–99% 的異丙醇並加上鹽巴，被發現也具有成效。
除此之外，市面上也有一些產品聲稱可以透過消毒或殺菌來解決鞋子異味問題，不過根據來自線上顧客評論的意見，對這些產品的滿意度並不高，覺得效果有限，而且一次只能處理一雙，家裡通常有二位數的鞋子，所以需要「更高效率」的產品。
作者經市場調查後，發現沒有找到任何在設計上有考慮到「家庭鞋子總數」的除鞋臭產品。
於是靈機一動，想到了「除臭鞋櫃」的點子。
幾乎每個家庭都有某種類型的鞋櫃；若能有一款鞋櫃能讓鞋子保持無異味，將會帶來極佳的使用體驗。
本文作者將「臭鞋」視為重新設計傳統鞋櫃、以改善使用者體驗的契機。
在探索各種能夠殺死細菌（臭味的元兇）的方法後，研究者最後選擇使用「紫外線」作為解決方案。
他們使用了可謂「臭鞋界的王者」，也就是校隊運動員的鞋子做為對象。
實驗裝置非常簡單：波長 270–280 奈米，額定功率 11 W 的紫外線燈管，並搭配開關式電源供應器。
整個實驗裝置連鞋子放在一個紙板做的盒子裡，以避免紫外線直接照射到眼睛。由於細菌主要聚集在鞋頭區域，因此將紫外光源對準該位置。
實驗結果顯示，只要照射 2–3 分鐘，就能殺死細菌並消除異味。
因此作者主張，鞋櫃好用當然很重要，不過千萬別忽略了腳臭問題啊！
設計一個內含紫外燈管的鞋櫃，就能解除這個困擾了。
不過呢，雖然研究者顯然已經設計了這個除臭鞋櫃，不過由於具有商機，所以在論文中並未揭露其細節。
這個研究，發表於 2021 年於印度舉辦的「Humanizing Work and Work Environment」（HWWE 2021，人性化的工作與工作環境）研討會，這個會議因為疫情而改為線上舉辦，論文集「Ergonomics for Improved Productivity」由Springer Nature 出版。
