Tone Madison investigates Porchlight living conditions, eviction rate
Local nonprofit Porchlight, Inc. has served Madison’s unhoused community for decades, providing affordable housing and supportive services to the city’s most vulnerable residents. The organization also filed more evictions last year than any other landlord in the city. And in a Tone Madison article published this week, current and former residents described unsanitary conditions, unresponsive staff, and inadequate services. Freelance reporter Sarah Eichstadt outlined her findings in a conversation this afternoon with WORT News Producer Faye Parks. Image courtesy: Porchlight, Inc. via their website.

Madison schools in good fiscal shape post-referendums, but taxpayers may feel the strain.
Budget planning for 2026 is underway for the Madison Metropolitan School District. Next year’s proposed spending plan was released to the public earlier this month. It includes a boost in revenue, after Madison voters approved two budget referendums in November to raise local property taxes. Nonpartisan research org Wisconsin Policy Forum released their analysis of the district’s proposed budget yesterday. Senior Research Associate Tyler Byrnes co-authored the report. He tells W-O-R-T reporter Maria Segura that Madison schools are in good fiscal shape – with a sizable cost to taxpayers.
