What’s it like being a raven or a crow?
This recording is based on an article Heather and I published in The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Read the original article here. I’ve copied the text here for convenience:Many of us as children may have wondered what’s going on inside the mind of an animal – what are they thinking and feeling? Most animal researchers study science because of their fascination with animals, but for a long time scientific norms made it impossible to even raise the question of animal consciousness without losing scientific credibility.Fortunately, those days have ended, thanks in lar...

Michaela betont die Bedeutung, den Fokus auf das Leben des Verstorbenen zu richten und Dankbarkeit für die gemeinsamen Momente zu empfinden. Panpsychism is a New Form of Creationism
In a recent post, I criticized panpsychism for following the same mantra as creationists. Just as creationists could not believe in Darwinian evolution because it challenged their cherished beliefs in the divine and in our uniqueness within creation, panpsychists are hesitant to explain consciousness in terms of physical processes out of a fear that this would rob consciousness of its magical properties. The fact that science makes only gradual progress, and that there is always more to learn about complex phenomena, is taken by both creationists and panpsychists as a reason to reject the possibility of a scientific explanation...

“Shrimp on the Barbie: Australian Christmas Edition” by Walter Veit
Crosspost from Substack This December, I returned to Australia to spend Christmas with my wife's family. It's my third Australian Christmas, and I'm still shocked by the differences to the German festivities not too far from the Alps where I grew up. It's a hot summer day in the Southern Hemisphere, people wearing goofy Christmas outfits, and the centerpiece of the feast isn't a duck but…shrimps or rather as Aussies call them, prawns. Australian shops stock up on shrimps before Christmas I found that already strange in the previous years. But this ye...

Heather Browning and Walter Veit, "What Are Zoos For?" (Policy Press, 2024)
Are zoos an anachronism in the 21st century when we can watch animals in their natural habitat, close-up from our couches without worrying about cruelty? Should they go the way of other bygone era ‘spectacles’ and ‘attractions’ that we now regard as barbaric? There are vocal campaigners and activists who believe so. Heather Browning and Walter Veit disagree, but they acknowledge there is a case to be answered. In What Are Zoos For? (Bristol University Press, 2024) they test the common justifications for zoos (entertainment, education, research, conservation) against the evidence and suggest what the best zoos of the future...

DECONSTRUCTING CONSCIOUSNESS: A philosophy for the science of animal consciousness
In this podcast philosopher Walter Veit outlines five elements of conscious experience he believes can be scientifically explored, why and when, in evolutionary terms, those elements first appeared. He explains his concept of 'pathological complexity', which of those five may have appeared first, and the ethical imperatives that underpin animal consciousness research. After talking about slugs, octopuses and corvids we end with a discussion on how his approach may assist in creating machines that are in some sense conscious.Participants:Walter Veit, Lecturer in Philosophy, University of Reading, UK. However, recently Dr. Kind, Dr. Veit, Dr. Heffernan, and our very own Dr. Helms made this debate into a multidisciplinary academic paper. Many of us have fond memories of going to the zoo as children, but zoo critics are vocal in their condemnation of keeping animals in captivity, believing there can be no such thing as a good zoo. And are they ultimately irreconcilable with concern for animal welfare? In this episode, George Miller talks to Heather Browning and Walter Veit, co-authors of 'What are Zoos For?' about the ethics of captivity, the challenges of balancing animal welfare with the need for p...

Li und der Schatz - Kapitel 20
Melanie Veit, Rostock, 6. PX and PhD Research - Walter Veit: "Model Diversity and the Embarrassment of the Riches"
In this new series, we interview PhD students and young academics about a recently published papers. In today's episode Jakob interviews University of Sydney's Walter Veit on his paper "Model Diversity and the Embarrassment of the Riches". Using the discussion on model pluralism in economics which followed Dani Rodrik‘s "Economics Rules", he argues that model pluralism as a thesis about the relationship between science and nature undermines the very idea of a general model selection framework for policy making.
