The message came hours before the U.S. Energy and Commerce Committee, which is responsible for health care funding, began debating a Republican-sponsored spending bill in Congress that seeks to cut $880 billion mostly from the budget funding Medicaid, or Medi-Cal as it’s known in California. The unprecedented slashing of the federal program, established almost 60 years ago, will help pay for $4.5 trillion in planned tax breaks being pushed by the White House. Republicans in the House insist they’re eliminating wasteful spending while Democrats warn that millions of Americans will be dropped from their coverage if the bill becomes law. The History of the Anti-Filipino Watsonville Riots
Welcome to Season 4, Episode 4. If you're new to our podcast then just know that we occasionally do a series called Most Forgotten Massacres, where we take time to talk about a moment (generally in U.S. history) where racism and discrimination turned to violence against the Asian Pacific American community. There were several factors that contributed to the death and destruction, and the impact was felt for years. It's important we acknowledge these moments in our h...

Have you ever heard of the Watsonville Riots of 1930? From January 19, 1930 - January 23, 1930, racially motivated acts of violence toward Filipinos occurred. Prior to the riots, anti-Filipino rhetoric was already in place as a result of immigration policies and capitalistic acts by those who employed Filipino farm workers. During these riots, hunting parties would drag Filipinos out of their homes and beat them to near death. Some of the Filipinos were even thrown over bridges. These riots eventually stopped, but acknowledgement did not occur until many years later. It wasn't until 2011 when the St...
