The Cordial Catholic
331: The Baptist Bible Scholar Who Became Catholic (w/ Dr. Stephen Boyce)
In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Bible scholar Dr. Stephen Boyce to tell the story of his conversion from Baptist to Anglican and, ultimately, into the Catholic Church. Stephen's story begins in independent Baptist churches, up through his PhD in a Baptist seminary, and through teaching and pastoring, researching the Early Church, and ultimately coming to the conclusion that his own denomination didn't look like Early Christianity. Driven by these realizations, Dr. Boyce, his wife, and kids became Anglican and, eventually, driven by the Real Presence in the Eucharist, Catholic.Dr. B...

All Negro Comics is a landmark issue in U.S. Comic History curated in 1947 by Orrin C. Evans a journalist at the Philadelphia Record (now the Philadelphia Inquirer). Evans intent was to provide positive portrayals of Black Life and Heroism, the exact opposite to the negative stereotypes common in comics, TV, and Movies during that time. 8 years after Action Comics #1 and 6 years after Captain America #1, All Negro Comics was the very first comic made entirely by Black Creators marking a step forward in media for that time. Join The Revd Paula Hollingsworth, Chaplain of St Paul's Cathedral, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. This week we are most grateful to The Revd Paula Hollingsworth, Chaplain of St Paul's Cathedral, who will lead our service of Parish Communion in church and has recorded a reflection for us to use online. In light of the man in the parable in today's reading, Paula suggest we consider the exercise of wondering what might be our dying wish or regret or prayer. One of the many advantages of SubStack, over other platforms, is the ability to update an article and video. I found this longish clip of an interview with Professor Antony C. Sutton several years ago and thought it was quite insightful for people who had not read his books. Once I posted the clip, my very knowledgeable audience quickly pointed out that the original interview was by a radio talk-show host named Dr. Stan Monteith, and the clip was truncated. I didn’t know this, when I posted it. So I have updated the interview in its entirety, including al...

A brush with... Sonia Boyce
Sonia Boyce talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Boyce, a recent Golden Lion-winner at the Venice Biennale, was born in London in 1962 and first made an impact through her figurative drawings before shifting to what she calls a “multi-sensory” practice. Over the past three decades, her art has been a social experience, as she has worked with individual and collective collaborators to create performances, video pieces and installations. They reflect on a wealth of subjects, from personal and coll...

William Boyce

4: The Monsoon Marketplace
The Indian Ocean had been the scene of robust international trade for centuries prior to the Portuguese arrival. In this episode, I explore the geography and economy of the region from antiquity to the 15th century. The maritime routes that crisscrossed the region were dependent upon the monsoon winds. This resulted in the development of ports like Quanzhou, China, as cosmopolitan centers of culture and commerce.Links to resourcesImagined Geographies: The Maritime Silk Roads in World History by Geoffrey C. Space is a challenging subject to teach, so a good subject for the first “Ways to Teach…” of this academic year. Thomas and Robin start with a look at some physics in the news. The proton is smaller than we thought! About 5% smaller which will make it even harder to find one if you lose it, but let’s not be negative… In other news, a new wonder-polymer promises transparency, strength and lightness all in one. Will it be as successful as graphene (which Robin made the mistake of questioning in front of an engineer). And so t...

His popularity went in and out of fashion during his lifetime, and trying to secure a pe...

The Early Music Show
Composer Profile: William Boyce
On the 300th anniversary of the birth of William Boyce, Lucie Skeaping and Jeremy Barlow explore some of the places in London where he lived and worked. Their journey takes them from a church in central London where he had his first job, to the public gardens in south London where his music was enjoyed by many.
