For this June edition of Dick's Picks we present another one of Carter's picks: Marathon Man from 1976. Directed by John Schlesinger and written by William Goldman, Marathon Man is one of the best thrillers from the golden age of the paranoid political thriller in the 1970s. Carter and Dick break down the plot and themes of Marathon Man while also talking about some of its production history as well as its place in the pantheon of 70s political thrillers.

The New Deal - America's Original Bailout Plan
In 1932, a newly minted phrase was on the lips of most Americans… “The New Deal.” It was first uttered by Franklin D. Roosevelt to an audience in Chicago during his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for President. It would soon become an American phenomenon and the largest governmental spending plan to date. Its intention – to put Americans back to work and revive the economy following a depression unleashed by the stock market crash of 1929. It was hailed as a huge success and won FDR the Presidency in 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. But, was it really as successful as everyone lauded it to be? D...

Was this episode merely a Cold War incident or was there more to it than fears of communist insurrection? Was this a spontaneous revolt by frustrated Guatemalans, in which the US simply supported the will of free peoples, or was there a more sinister plot unfolding? The discussion centers on the involvement of American government agents, especially the CIA and those with ties to t...

Capturing carbon is important for helping offset CO2 emissions and tackling climate changes. Sonification of the Yale Trigonometric Parallax Catalogue
A sonification of the Yale Trigonometric Parallax Catalogue, published in 1995 by American astronomer William van Altena. He completed the work started by Frank Schlesinger in 1924 (who had made a huge step forward in the field thanks to progresses in the use of photographic plates) and continued by Louise Freeland Jenkins in 1952. It is the largest catalogue of stellar parallaxes compiled with ground-based telescopes, listing positions and parallaxes for over 8000 stars, with a precision of about 0.01 arcseconds. The Day of the Locust • The Next Reel
There have been a good number of films made about the film industry, but few have taken such a dark and surreal look at the Hollywood machine as John Schlesinger's 1975 "The Day of the Locust" did. While it's based on the Nathanael West book from 1939 and takes place at that time, it feels like a modern — or possibly even timeless — story of the business and the fringe-dwellers who want to be a part of its magic. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we begin our Richard Dysart series with Schlesinger's film. We talk about our experiences with this fil...

David Nasaw
Joseph Patrick Kennedy, patriarch of America's greatest political dynasty, is widely remembered as an indomitable, elusive, fatally flawed figure. In The Patriarch, historian David Nasaw reveals a man far more complicated than the popular portrait. Drawing on never-before-published materials from archives on three continents, Nasaw examines those parts of Joseph Kennedy's life that have long been shrouded in rumor and prejudice. Trained as a banker, Kennedy was also a Hollywood mogul, a stock exchange wizard, a shipyard manager, the founding chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and ambassador to London during the Battle of Britain. A loving and...

Marathon Man • The Next Reel
In 1976, John Schlesinger made a film adaptation of William Goldman's novel Marathon Man, and in the process, made everyone afraid to go back to their dentist. There are few things more horrifying than watching Laurence Olivier's Nazi dentist drill into Dustin Hoffman's teeth (the healthy ones because it'll hurt more, naturally). Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we start a new series digging into great films from 1976, a great year for cinema, and we start it off with Marathon Man. We chat about the tonal shift in films in the 70s (and mention the great documentary about 70s fi...
