John Wycliffe, England, Theologian
May 22. John Wycliffe. Wycliffe was a Protestant long before there were Protestants. The Protestant Reformation is a 16th century phenomenon, but Wycliffe lived in the 14th century. Two-hundred years before Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the castle door, Wycliffe wrote and circulated 18 Theses, including outright challenges to the Catholic church’s authority. The Legacy of John Wycliffe
The Morning Star of the Reformation As we saw earlier, from 1378-1417 the powerful Roman Church had not one, not two, but eventually three popes. Each one damning the other and all who followed them. For forty years a whole generation was under a curse. In the midst of this dark time, a glimmer of light in England arose named John Wycliffe (1320-1384). Wycliffe was a priest, a theologian and a scholar at Oxford University. Wycliffe had the audacity to question church authorities and, like the reformers after him, was willing to die for his beliefs, saying “I...

God's Peculiar People: Learning How to Live from Heros of the Faith
John Wycliffe: Bible Translation Series
John Wycliffe (also spelled Wyclif, Wickliffe, and other variants; c. 1328 – 31 December 1384) was an English scholastic philosopher, theologian, biblical translator, reformer, Catholic priest, and a seminary professor at the University of Oxford. He became an influential dissident within the Catholic priesthood during the 14th century and is considered an important predecessor to Protestantism. Wycliffe questioned the privileged status of the clergy, who had bolstered their powerful role in England, and advocated radical poverty of the clergy. Wycliffe has been characterized as the "evening star" of scholasticism and as the morning star of the English Reformation. Wycliffe advocated the transla...

The Paranormal (April 2019)- David Reed
An interesting night of discussion on things that go BUMP in the night. Two-thirds of the close to fifty people in attendance raised their hand when asked if they had experienced or knew someone who experienced a paranormal event. The topics ranged from the difference between demonic possession and ghostly encounters and the friendly/protective ghosts versus the maleovolent. David Reed, Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Theology at Wycliffe College, has studied the paranormal and was consulted for forty episodes of Ghostly Encounters, which ran from 2005 to 2011, shared his opinion of how we should view these phenomenons.
