God does not have a magic wand
Today I saw a magic wand in my mind's eye. In fairy tales, whoever wields a wand has power over another to bestow good or bad gifts. God is not like that. He is giving us the choice to come to Him, to be with Him, for Him to bestow the good gifts that He has for us. Jesus told His disciple Philip, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9), having previously said that He had come to give abundant life (see John 10:10). Jesus is in the image of God, the bestower of abundant life. However...

A pair of moccasins
Today I had a picture of a pair of mocassins, reminding me of the proverb "Don't judge another person until you have walked a mile in their moccasins". Most of us know that this warns us not to negatively judge another's actions and words until we understand the circumstances in their life which have triggered off their responses, as we could easily falter in the same manner. What I did not know until today is that these words are from a poem written in 1895 by Mary T. Lathrap, originally called "Judge Sofly". She was clearly a strong woman of justice...

Forgiveness
Today I am reminded of Matthew 6:14 "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us". Jesus tells us to forgive 70 X 7. With the number 7 signifying completeness, Jesus's figure represents the absolute necessity to forgive completely. What a tough call that is. It helps to remember that Jesus understands that we start off as spiritual 'newborn babies' and that we are growing up in our salvation (1 Peter 2:1) so it is a process to learn to wholly forgive. Jesus exemplified enduring insults, suffering and injustice, whilst trusting that God "judges justly" (1 Peter 2:) and we can hold onto that Truth...

Beautiful in imperfection and immaturity
Today I saw a large beautiful leaf which still hadn't completely unfurled and yet could still be a worthwhile addition to a floral display. This is a wonderful reminder that before we have achieved a perfect state we can still be beautiful. I think of the Japanese art of kintsugi whereby gold, silver or platinum lacquer is used to repair broken pottery creating an even more beautiful piece. It is based on the Japanese philosophy which embraces flaws and imperfections and transforms them to something of beauty. God wants us to trust Him that He loves us despite our flaws...

Why We Need to Ditch Four Popular "Christian" Phrases
Language matters. The words and phrases we use have an impact -- whether it's immediate or results from a slow-build. Today we examine four familiar phrases Christians use that need tossing. While the intention might be good, that doesn't mean the effect is. We look at:"God doesn't call the qualified; he qualifies the called.""Christians aren't supposed to judge.""God wants to use you."This isn't so much a phrase as an idea expressed in different ways. Christianity isn't a packaged set of correct theological beliefs; it's a way of living. Empower yourself...

Apparently, records of incense can be dated as far back as 3600 bc India and then on to China, Greece and elsewhere. It is used for many reasons such as for religious, spiritual and meditative purposes. The Buddhists also have a practical purpose, reminiscent of the days when running water was scarce and an incense stick was automatically lit to create a welcoming smell.
